Netflix today released the first trailer for the second season of the television series “Sense8,” the show that follows a group of people called sensates (those who are gifted with a psychic and empathetic link between another human being) as they are pursued by shadowy forces looking to coopt their powers. The series was created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the sibling creative duo behind such films as “The Matrix” and “Cloud Atlas,” as well as J. Michael Straczynski, “Rising Stars” creator and “Babylon 5” writer.

The first season of “Sense8” debuted in 2015 and was received positively by critics. The show brought together eight sensates from around the world, each hailing from different cultures, who awaken to their powers after experiencing a shared vision depicting the violent death of a woman named Angelica. Sensates experience an emotional and mental connection, sharing both skills and secrets with each other. The sensate cluster is hunted by one of their own, dubbed Whispers, who tracks sensates using their psychic link. The second season of “Sense8” looks to continue the group’s struggle against their pursuers.

Much like the first season, the second season of “Sense8” will be filmed largely on location. Lilly Wachowski took a break from writing, directing and executive producing the season to recover from gender transition, marking the first time the siblings have not worked together extensively on a project. Lilly Wachowski remained a co-creator during the production of the second season.

The first season of “Sense8” received numerous awards for its presentation of LGBTQ and multicultural characters. The show won the 2016 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series and the Location Managers Guild Award for Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Television Series.

The second season will see one of the sensates, Capheus "Van Damme" Onyango, recast. Aml Ameen played the character in the show’s first season, but was recast as of the Christmas special that aired last year. Toby Onwumere will play the Nairobian Jean-Claude Van Damme enthusiast in the upcoming season. “Sense8” is Onwumere’s first major acting role.
