WARNING: The following contains spoilers for See Season 2, Episode 3, "The Compass," now available on Apple TV+.

In Season 2 of See, Kofun (Archie Madekwe) has found it difficult to live up to the legacy of the savage Baba Voss (Jason Momoa). Despite being sighted, Kofun just doesn't have that killer instinct, which is why Baba left him out of the rescue mission to get his sister, Haniwa, from Edo Voss and Trivantes. Witchfinders find Kofun and take him to Pennsa. And while it seems like a dangerous expedition in the wilderness, a mini-civil war breaks out and leads to him getting a mentor better than Baba.

This is none other than the new character, Toad. Played by Hoon Lee from HBO's Warrior, Toad and his Witchfinders no longer want to kill Kofun for being sighted as Queen Kane has made it legal. He's her nephew, after all, and she wants Kofun and Baba's team brought back to the Payan capital to be with their mother, Princess Maghra.

Toad can't afford to wait on the others, so he takes Kofun alone, knowing other blind tribes may not adhere to the queen's new rules and try to slaughter the entourage to get to the boy. But little does he know, insurrection is already stirring within his camp.

The other Witchfinders bicker in private about keeping Kofun alive. They can't see the peace being kept at Pennsa, with Kane suddenly changing their religious law. Folks with vision are devils and witches who destroyed the old world due to their lust for power and war, so they want to either kill Kofun or leave him in the woods so nature can take its course.

Toad chides them, though, as he won't break royal decree. He makes it clear this is their duty. However, they attack the kid at nightfall, forcing Toad's hand. He slaughters them -- a bit more elegantly than Baba would -- and saves Kofun, confessing he doesn't like him, but it's his job to protect him. The thing is, Toad's more compassionate and understanding. So, while there's tension, Kofun takes to him more.

Baba was too gruff and intimidating, especially as Kofun knows he was a slaver. In contrast, Toad is gentler and feels like the person Kofun will learn more from. Given they're from different worlds, with Toad having hunted Kofun's people, there's also nuance that could help them learn from each other, mature and evolve along the way. Either way, Toad seems to believe in Kofun more than Baba. As the fellowship of two journeys to Pennsa, with trouble sure to come hunting them, it's going to be quite an educational experience as cultures, and former enemies meld in the name of survival.

The first three episodes of Season 2 of See are available on Apple TV+, with subsequent episodes available every Friday.
