Marvel Studios' upcoming Secret Invasion series will likely pull back the veil on a secret mystery that has been in the works for years. Recently, it's been revealed that the series would be set during The Blip. However, this has raised a massive mystery as Nick Fury was seemingly erased from existence. As a result, why would he be a lead in the series? Not only that, but the setting has created the perfect opportunity for the Skrull species, and possibly brought to light the possibility that this series could only be the start of a larger invasion.

The comic event of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu revealed that Skrulls have been replacing humans for years and created the perfect invasion force to take over Earth. With paranoia at an all-time high, the series asked readers, "Who Do You Trust?" In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the topic is far more delicate as the Skrulls, first introduced in Captain Marvel, were shown as more benevolent than their adversaries, the Kree. Furthermore, because they only wanted a home, they were seen as survivors and refugees, which created a more sympathetic angle. But it's important to realize that this was only one group of Skrulls that felt this way. Sadly, a whole planet may not feel the same, making trust hard to come by.

Rather than focus on a genuine invasion, the series may play more on the secretive aspect of the show. With Thanos having erased half of all life, the surviving Skrulls could seize the opportunity to lead a normal life by taking over the lives of those that have been dusted. Families who see them would be so happy their loved one survived that they wouldn't wonder if it was actually them. Furthermore, the Skrulls would have a home, while more nefarious sects of the species would be fully integrated into society.

This strategy would create a massive security breach worldwide, and as governments try to pick up the pieces, world unity would be more important than ever. This would mean Skrulls could infiltrate the highest government offices with ease. However, the moment that half of all life was returned, it's likely the Skrulls had to change up their tactics. Starting with the possibility of killing those who had been revived or taking over others they had gotten to know instead... all to maintain appearances.

With humanity once again trying to reorganize how to set up the world and governments as half of the planet returns, there's another shift in power and further division. But if the Skrulls maintain their positions and move with the governments, their plans would be even more effective as they could set up the world to be better primed for a full-scale invasion. No matter what, the Skrulls' plan to take over would be in the cards, but the defeat of Thanos would only mean that their efforts would be postponed only slightly.

Ultimately, Secret Invasion may be a precursor to a larger problem for the MCU because having the series take place during The Blip would be the perfect setup to properly infiltrate the world's powers. By the end of the series, Nick Fury may think he stopped the rise of the Skrulls on Earth, but it will only be revealed that there are bigger things at play. The paranoia would set in just when he had it all figured out. Secret Invasion has the potential to be one of the scariest alien invasion stories ever put to film, not because the aliens are scary, but because they are patient and more forward-thinking than anyone would assume.
