A new photo of Secret Invasion star Samuel L. Jackson sparked speculation that Nick Fury-focused flashbacks will feature in the upcoming Disney+ series.

Jackson posted a selfie from the Secret Invasion set on Instagram with the caption "Patch, no patch, no scar, no scar. Old School Fury Day, gotta find the Groove!" The reference to Jackson's lack of eye patch and facial prosthetics, coupled with the mention of "Old School Fury," suggests the star is filming scenes set much earlier in the MCU timeline, likely before his character Nick Fury lost his left eye.

Jackson previously portrayed the younger Nick Fury in 2019's Captain Marvel wherein the character's left peeper is clawed out by Goose, a cat-like alien identified as a Flerkin, towards the end of the movie. If Secret Invasion does include flashbacks featuring Fury, his patch-free, scarless visage suggests those scenes will take place prior to the events of Captain Marvel, which is set in 1995.

That said, fans shouldn't expect the older Fury to sport his iconic eyepatch in Secret Invasion, either. Recent Secret Invasion set photos show Jackson with heavy make-up over his uncovered left eye to simulate the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director's ocular impairment. Jackson was also rocking a beard, grey overcoat and dark green beanie in the set photos, marking a new look for Nick Fury.

Reports suggest that filming on Secret Invasion will wrap soon. The shoot has taken place in a variety of locations throughout the UK (including London, Leeds, Huddersfield, and Halifax), as well as across wider Europe. Secret Invasion's cast and extras have been spotted wearing heavy winter gear and traditional Russian garbs, leading fans to speculate that the production's sets are doubling for locations in Russia.

Along with Jackson, Secret Invasion stars Ben Mendelsohn as Talos and Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, with Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, and Carmen Ejogo set to appear in undisclosed roles. The series is based on the Marvel Comics crossover storyline of the same name by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu released in 2008. In the source material, the alien Skrulls use their shapeshifting abilities to impersonate several prominent superheroes and covertly invade Earth, although how closely the show will follow the plot of the comics is not yet known.

Secret Invasion will arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2022. A premiere date has not been announced.
