New posters for Secret Invasion spark trust issues as they suggest anyone in the upcoming series could be a Skrull.Marvel released new character posters for Secret Invasion, starting with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn's Talos. Though Fury and Talos have known connections to the Skrulls, the latter being one, all the posters include the tagline "Who can you trust? and the tweets feature the warning "Identities not confirmed." Along with Fury and Talos, the posters spotlight James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle), Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) and Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders) along with multiple new MCU characters.RELATED: Nick Fury Prepares to Fight the Skrull Horde in Secret Invasion's New Disney+ Promo

The Skrulls are central to the premise of Secret Invasion as a radicalized group of the shape-shifting alien race invades Earth to try and take what they believe is owed to them by force. The group, led by Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir,) decides to assume the identities of political figures after feeling Fury went back on his word after promising a new home for the Skrulls. While Fury works in tandem with Talos, the leader of a Skrull sect, Talos' daughter, G'iah (Emilia Clarke), harbors a grudge against Fury for him supposedly going back on his word.

The Darker Tone of Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders recently played up the litany of trust issues in the series while hinting at the series' darker tone compared to other MCU efforts. In Secret Invasion, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent reconnects with Fury and will reportedly be a more focal point in the series.

Along with the Skrulls' planned raid of Earth, Fury's personality shift is a point of emphasis on Secret Invasion. The series sees a more somber, reflective and wary Fury than usual as he still contemplates the tragic events of the last two Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame. Fury also shows his age and a new look, ditching his signature eyepatch and boasting a more grizzled exterior as the stress caused by these strategies, the S.H.I.E.L.D.'s collapse and the Skrulls turning on him all weight heavily on his mind.
