Secret Invasion's Emilia Clarke recently promised that the upcoming show is for everyone, not just Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.

Clarke, who portrays the Skrull shapeshifter G'iah, discussed the six-episode miniseries' broad appeal in an interview with Empire. "It's definitely a show for the fans, but it's also a show that my mum, who doesn't watch Marvel, will watch and get, do you know what I mean?" Clarke said. "You can get into dangerous territory sometimes with this sort of genre where if you haven't watched all 17 other films or shows, you're not going to get it. This isn't that at all."

Clarke's co-star Ben Mendelsohn expressed similar sentiments in a recent interview, describing Secret Invasion as an MCU outing "the grownups can dig." Mendelsohn, who reprises the role of Talos he played in Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home, also said Secret Invasion was "mental" and had the potential to be Marvel Studios' "coolest" project. The star teased some of the miniseries' character dynamics as well, hinting that Talos' relationship with Secret Invasion protagonist Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has changed for better and worse since fans last saw them together.

How Secret Invasion Ties Into MCU Canon

The Fury/Talos partnership is just one of several ways that Secret Invasion ties into wider MCU canon, despite Clarke and Mendelsohn's efforts to underscore the show's more standalone nature. Another example of how closely connected Secret Invasion is to MCU continuity is the presence of James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle), a character who has shown up everywhere from Iron Man to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Despite this, Secret Invasion will mark the first time that Cheadle and Jackson share a scene since making their respective MCU debuts.

For his part, Jackson seems less interested in downplaying Secret Invasion's place within the overarching MCU narrative. On the contrary, the Hollywood legend recently emphasized the key role the miniseries will play in setting up The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel slated to premiere in November 2023. "This series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen," Jackson said. "All these things are connected in an interesting sort of way." The Marvels also serves as a direct continuation of another Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel, which introduced one of the film's protagonists, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel.

Secret Invasion arrives on Disney+ on June 21, 2023, and will run for six episodes.
