Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders recently confirmed that the Skrulls have been active on the Earth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for decades.

Smulders, who plays Maria Hill in the upcoming Disney+ series, discussed the shape-shifting alien race in an episode of the Phase Zero podcast. "I mean when we think about the world that they're in, the Skrulls have been around since we saw them in Captain Marvel," she said. "They've been building in numbers. And are they good? Are they bad? We're gonna find out in the show. But there's certainly a lot of them and so it sort of turns into this, 'Can I trust you? Can I not trust you?' And it's really cool. It's certainly fraught with a lot of tension."

Marvel Studios screened a Secret Invasion trailer during its San Diego Comic-Con 2022 panel, which teased the show's more paranoid tone compared to other MCU projects. Notably, it included a tense encounter between Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in which the Skrull warned Fury to be his guard against an unspecified threat. Hill, James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) also featured in the trailer, along with MCU newcomer Olivia Colman in a still-undisclosed role.

Secret Invasion Undergoes Reshoots Due To Ukraine War?

Secret Invasion wrapped principal photography in April 2022, however, the production is currently undergoing reshoots. Recent reports claim that the additional filming is at least partly designed to remove unintended parallels between Secret Invasion's plot and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This apparently included at least one "devastating" sequence that Marvel Studios felt was too similar to real-life events. Neither Disney+ nor Marvel Studios have publicly commented on the rationale behind the reshoots, however.

That said, at least one member of the production has opened up about the Secret Invasion reshoots: actor Christopher McDonald, who fills another of the show's unspecified roles. McDonald made no mention of the invasion of Ukraine when talking about the follow-up shoot, which he confirmed was taking place in London. Instead, he chalked it up to director Ali Selim wanting to improve the overall quality of the series. "They're doing reshoots in a way that's making the story better. Apparently, there's a new writer in there. He's amped it up, and the series is going so much deeper than before," McDonald said.
