The second "Star Trek Beyond" trailer arrived online Friday night, and while the first trailer received criticism for its emphasis on action, this one strikes a distinctly more serious tone (while still including plenty of action, natch).

This trailer features plenty more of both the film's villain, Krall, played by perennial fan-favorite Idris Elba; and Sofia Boutella as another new alien character, Jaylah. It also features a good amount of quiet introspection, focused on Kirk's (Chris Pine) pondering his identity and his father's legacy.

The first "Star Trek Beyond" trailer debuted this past December, and even Simon Pegg -- who co-wrote the film and stars as Scotty -- was quoted as saying he "didn't love" the clip. Given director Justin Lin's pedigree of directing four of the "Fast and the Furious" films (and the inclusion of '90s hit "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys, which was also used in the 2009 "Star Trek" film) some fans wondered if that style was going to be brought to "Star Trek" -- though this new trailer feels much more in line with franchise expectations.

"Star Trek Beyond," the third film in the current film series, is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016.
