It was reported at the end of last year that Ruben Fleischer, who did such a great job as the director on Zombieland, would next be turning to Gangster Squad, a story of 1940s gangsters and a special police unit tasked with keeping them out of Los Angeles. Fleischer made his big screen directorial debut with his 2009 zombie comedy, and he reportedly beat out Darren Aronofsky and Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) for the Gangster gig.
With the director set for the Will Beall-penned flick, the rest of the movie is now starting to come together. Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin are all said to be in talks for starring roles, Deadline reports. Penn is said to be up for the role of LA mobster Mickey Cohen, who is said to be “the linchpin of the film.” Gosling and Brolin are up for the roles of cops tasked with bringing Cohen down.
The production is reportedly set to kick off this fall, presumably with a planned late-2012 release. Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick will produce for Warner Bros.
