The SDCC He-Man 40th-anniversary panel wasn't just a reflection on the franchise, but a look forward, giving attendees their first glimpse of the upcoming third season of Netflix's He-Man & the Masters of the Universe.

Though a release date has yet to be announced, the third season was recently revealed during a series of Netflix announcements for upcoming programming. The newly revealed trailer, however, highlights the most epic season of the series yet.

The new trailer highlights the struggles of He-Man and his allies Man-at-Arms, Sorceress, and Battlecat as they fight to save Eternia from their former ally, Rampage, who has sided with the newly revived spirit of Skeletor. Raised alongside Skeletor is an army of zombified serpents, evoking the original series' King Hiss and the Snake Men. Despite the return of their fellow compatriot and Greyskull guardian Eldress, the trailer finds the team at odds with the many threats they face, pondering if they'll have to dip into the realm's dark Havoc energy to save Eternia.

Mer-Man Makes His Series Debut

Notably also debuting in the trailer is Mer-Man, the traditionally stoic, ocean-faring villain who often found himself at odds with He-Man and Skeletor alike. In addition to an updated traditional design, one sequence sees He-Man at the mercy of a massive, snake-like Mer-Man form that evokes imagery of Pokémon's Gyarados. Mer-Man is only a brief mention in the trailer itself, but given his prominence in the greater lore of Masters of the Universe, it's a safe bet that the fishy fiend will be a serious threat to the team.

Debuting in 2021 on Netflix, He-Man & The Masters of the Universe is an updated re-imagining of the classic He-Man franchise, aimed at a notably younger audience than the traditional story has captured in recent years. In this re-telling, Adam is a young prince who has been granted the powers to transform into He-Man via a Power Sword. Adam shares that power with his friends Teela, Duncan, Krass'tine and Cringer, who become Sorceress, Man-at-Arms, Ram-Ma'am and Battlecat, respectively. Also aiding them is Eldress, a former guardian of Castle Grayskull and Ork-0, a robotic drone built in the image of the legendary wizard, Orko the Great.

The previous season of episodes brought the Masters to their lowest point. Despite disappearing after He-Man destroyed his Havoc Staff, Skeletor's spirit lived on through Krass' Ram gem, promising the young Master that he would revive her parents if she aided him. Krass would betray the Masters, embracing the Havoc energy and becoming Rampage, the final Nemesis. Despite its seeming cliffhanger ending, no third season was immediately announced.

Airing on Netflix, He-Man & the Masters of the Universe Season 3 does not currently have a release date.
