Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Gary Miereanu welcomed fans back after two years of virtual comic cons and to the world premiere of Green Lantern: Beware My Power at Comic-Con International Friday night, before treating them to the first showing of the animated feature.

The audience applauded the feature upon its conclusion, and after the credits rolled, Miereanu introduced the cast and crew to the crowd before moderating a panel discussion. In attendance were supervising producer Butch Lukic, director Jeff Wamester, screenwriters John Semper and Ernie Altbacker, and actors Aldis Hodge (Green Lantern/John Stewart), Jimmi Simpson (Green Arrow), Jamie Gray Hyder (Hawkgirl) and Brian Bloom (Adam Strange).

Miereanu pointed out that this year is the 50th anniversary of John Stewart, before asking how putting the feature together worked out during a pandemic. Lukic responded and said, "We had to get used to using Zoom and other tools, but after a couple of months we got used to it. We got up, worked ten hours a day, and we loved it."

Hodge added, "Some of us got to record in cool places like London, while the rest of us had to record our lines in our hometowns. This panel is nice, because it's the first time I got to meet everyone involved."

"We actually wrote the story before the pandemic," Semper added.

Miereanu discussed the various storylines used in the film. "Originally we were going to do a movie where Green Lantern and Green Arrow travel the country, like Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams' story," Lukic said. "But doing a space story was more fun, and fun to design."

Green Lantern: Beware My Power features John Stewart's origin as Green Lantern, who immediately gets swept up into a cosmic conspiracy ushering in a war between Rann and Thanagar. The feature reveals what happened to Hal Jordan, and why he lost his ring to Stewart. The take on Jordan is different than what fans might be expecting.

Hodge talked about bringing John Stewart to life as a lead character for the first time. "The fact that it was the first main film with John Stewart made it an incredible honor to be involved with. I wanted kids to feel like I felt about John Stewart when I was a kid. I wanted to make sure you all felt my passion and excitment."

Miereanu talked about the cast's chemistry. "It's amazing this is the first time all of us are in the same room," Ryder said. "It's amazing how we recorded apart yet came together so well in one piece."

Lukic mentioned the topic of deleted scenes. "We were over budget and had to condense some scenes. We also had a scene where Hal Jordan, who had been killed, had now disappeared. We left that out and decided to let the audiences decide what happened."

Miereanu brought up Stewart's constructions from his power ring in the film. "They're largely military, since he has PTSD," Lukic said. "But when he faced Hal Jordan, he needed different kinds of weapons."

Bloom added, "I applaud the team for incorporating [PTSD] in John Stewart's story."

Semper talked about fellow writer Attbacker, who he had worked with before. "It was great working with Ernie -- I trained him." Semper mentioned his work on the '90s Spider-Man animated series.

Miereanu mentioned Adam Strange, and why he was included. "When we ditched the road movie," Lukic said, "we came up with using the Adam Strange storyline."

Bloom added, "I appreciate being added to this movie."

Miereanu then announced a new feature to be released in the fall, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, and come 2023 a Legion of Super-Heroes feature, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, as well as Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part One. Justice League: Warworld is also on the upcoming slate of animated films.
