BBC America has debuted a first look at "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency," a limited series based on Douglas Adams' humorous detective novels.

Adapted by Max Landis, the four-episode series stars Samuel Barnett as unconventional detective Dirk Gently and Elijah Wood as his reluctant assistant Todd. Together they navigate metaphysical mysteries.

Adams ("A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") published his first "Dirk Gently" novel in 1987. A sequel, "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul," was released the following year.

A co-production of AMC Studios, Ideate Media and IDW Entertainment, which published a comic adaptation last year, "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" premieres Oct. 22 on BBC America.
