Following in the footsteps of Wes Craven, Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett decided to keep the cast in the dark as to who the Woodsboro killer really is. Craven famously kept the killer-mystery alive in his horror films by purposefully filming additional/unused scenes to keep its actors unsure of the film's big reveal.

Producer William Sherak recently revealed that the upcoming Scream film took the intrigue one step further, giving its actors differing versions of the script so no one would really know who Ghostface is, as reported by CinemaBlend.

"There are multiple versions of the draft out there and most of the cast don’t know if they have the right version or not," Sherak said. "So we’ve been playing that game with them as well. And the fun of a Scream movie is that everyone is guilty until proven innocent, not the other way around. So the goal is to keep that going for as long as possible and have fun with it."

However, the cited interview did take place before filming wrapped on set, which means since then it's possible actors have been told who the killer is. Fans speculated as well that it's likely its leading stars and franchise veterans Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox might have received the film's true script.

Plot details for the film have been scarce, but the film will reportedly follow a woman who "returns to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of violent crimes." It seems heavily suggested that Sydney Prescott is the woman in question.

Campbell will reprise her role as Sydney Prescott -- a woman doomed to be followed by a ghost-face killer, despite, or perhaps in spite of who she trusted in her life. She's starred in each film within the Scream franchise and has called the 2022 film a "fresh" take. At the time of this writing, it's unclear what brings Syndey back to her murderous hometown.

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream 5 stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
