While Scream has only just hit theater screens, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group have announced the sixth installment in the Scream franchise.

The creative team behind the recently released film are attached to return-- Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence are set to direct, and screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will return to pen the script. In addition, it has been revealed that production on the next entry in the horror saga is scheduled to begin this summer.

In a joint statement, Paramount and Spyglass said, "We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family."

Vanderbilt and Busick also stated, "Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the 'Scream' story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor."

Scream 5 premiered in theaters on Jan. 14 and has seen both critical and financial success, temporarily overtaking taking box office juggernaut Spider-Man: No Way Home in weekly earnings. At the time of writing, Scream has earned over $1o7 million worldwide after nearly three weeks in theaters.

The recently released film returns the franchise to the town of Woodsboro, 25 years after the events of the 1996 original film. The movie has been described as a tribute to the original's director, the late Wes Craven, and has been described by the cast and crew as a relaunch of the franchise, as opposed to a direct sequel.

Scream 5 is the first film in the franchise not directed by Craven, who passed in August 2015, but does see the return of several legacy characters, including actor Courteney Cox returning as Gale Weathers, alongside cameos from the likes of Hayden Panettiere, Matthew Lillard and many more.

The film was one of many to be heavily impacted by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It was filmed in late 2020 and originally scheduled for release in 2021 before being pushed back. Furthermore, a red carpet premiere was planned, but was ultimately cancelled due to the Omicron variant.
