Gale Weathers will no longer be an investigative reporter in the upcoming Scream reboot.

In an interview with the United Kingdom's Total Film magazine, as reported by HelloSidneyScream legacy star Courteney Cox, revealed what her character has been up to in the eleven years since Scream 4, including her new profession. "Gale now works on a morning show," Cox said. "She has the respect of a job where she gets to call the shots and has an audience that is tuning in just for her. She's in a better place, as far as her professional life goes. I don't think that personally, she's in a great place. But, you know, she's very selfish, so I'm not sure she's ever going to be one to find happiness in that way."

In the same interview, Cox's co-stars, Neve Campbell and Dave Arquette, were more tight-lipped about their characters' returns to the notoriously secretive horror franchise. Arquette, who plays Sheriff Dewey Riley, said, "He's 10 years older… He's in Woodsboro. There's a lot that we need to sort of protect because Scream's a classic whodunit."

As for Campbell, the actor behind Scream's own scream queen Sidney Prescott, shared that her character has since moved out of her hometown of Woodsboro. "Sidney is now a mother, so another level of strength as a woman. She's living out of her hometown. She lives away. And she has a happy life," Campbell said. "And that's all I can tell you!"

Apart from the returning cast members, two new characters will be joining the horror series in the upcoming legacy sequel: Melissa Barrera's Samantha Carpenter and Jack Quaid's Richie Kirsch. Quaid compared himself to his character Richie, saying that they both "[don't] really know a tonne about scary movies. "And he gets quite an education in this movie…," Quaid said. For her character, Barrera shared, "Sam is troubled and that's what drew me to the role, the fact that she's such a complicated character. And she's had a dark past."

Samantha Carpenter appeared to be the primary target of the killer Ghostface in the film's first trailer which was released in October, reintroducing Sidney, Gale and Dewey. However, Scream fans shouldn't necessarily trust what they see in the trailer. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett told viewers that they employed misdirection into the film's marketing.

"This was a hard trailer for [marketing] to put together, and I think one of the things we're happy with is that anything that you might think is a spoiler in this, there's a good chance you're wrong," Bettinelli-Olpin said. "There are misdirects within the movie. There are misdirects within the trailer. For us, that's just the fun of the whole thing to make this a big whodunnit."

Scream arrives in theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
