A new promotional image for Scream takes the horror franchise back to the origins of the slasher genre with a retro-style poster.Shared on the Scream franchise's Twitter account, the poster focuses on a moonlit Ghostface as the killer brandishes a shiny, bloody knife. The typography, aged-looking paper and crease along the middle wouldn't be out of place on a vintage movie poster from the 1970s, the decade that gave birth to slashers with movies like Halloween. Text on the posters advises everyone, "Don't see it alone!" while an ominous tagline behind the villain's masked face reads, "It's always someone you know."
This isn't the first time Scream has teased the identity of Ghostface in a promotional poster. A previous batch of posters that focused on Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers and David Arquette's Dewey Riley showed each character holding Ghostface's mask. All three characters appeared in the first Scream movie released in 1996 and will return for this fifth installment in the franchise.
Another poster took the teasing even further by using a tagline that promised, "The killer is on this poster." Alongside the returning Campbell, Cox and Arquette, this poster also features several new characters to the franchise such as Melissa Barrera's Sam Carpenter, Jack Quaid's Richie Kirsch and Jenna Ortega's Tara Carpenter. In all, the poster features 12 characters underneath the looming mask of Ghostface, and anyone could be the killer -- or killers.
Many of these new characters were introduced in a recent featurette from Paramount Pictures entitled "Meet the New Blood." The short video features clips from the movie and interviews with both new and returning cast members. In a scene reminiscent of the first Scream movie, several of these new faces discuss Ghostface's return while poking fun at one another. In the featurette, Campbell says of returning, "This feels like coming back to the first Scream. It's fun to get into it again."
The addition of so many new faces to the Scream franchise isn't a sign of a reboot, but rather a relaunch of the franchise, according to Cox. "This is the fifth one, it's not Scream 5 though, this is Scream. It's hip, it's scary, it's just a new Scream -- it's not a reboot, it's not a remake, it's just a brand new launch," she explained. "The directors are incredible. They're making it absolutely -- it's a new franchise."
Scream will stab its way into theaters on Jan. 14, despite the temporary closure of theaters in several countries due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant threat.
