The Ghostface mask is the opposite of a tunnel of love in the official Dolby Cinema poster for the next film in the Scream franchise.

The poster sees Ghostface looming large over a highway surrounded by woods. The mouth of the mask acts as a dark tunnel for cars to drive through, seemingly representing the dark shadow Ghostface's legacy casts over the town of Woodsboro. While the Scream series has always made it a point to emphasize that the person behind the Ghostface mask is flesh and bone, this poster definitely makes the killer seem a bit more mythic.

The fifth film in the Scream franchise, simply titled Scream, is slated for release on Jan. 14, 2022. It serves as a sequel to 1996's Scream, 1997's Scream 2, 2000's Scream 3 and 2011's Scream 4, with Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette -- who have appeared in all four films thus far -- reprising their roles as Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers-Riley and Dwight "Dewey" Riley, respectively. Additionally, fellow franchise veteran Roger L. Jackson returns as the voice of Ghostface, while Scream 4 alum Marley Shelton reprises her role as Judy Hicks.

2022's Scream also features a plethora of franchise newcomers, including Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Dylan Minnette as Wes Hicks, Jack Quaid as Richie Kirsch, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks–Martin, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks–Martin, Kyle Gallner as Vince Schneider, Sonia Ben Ammar as Liv McKenzie and Mikey Madison as Amber Freeman.

Set 25 years after the original Woodsboro murders in 1996's Scream, 2022's Scream follows yet another string of Ghostface attacks, with the new killer targeting the relatives of previous Ghostface killers. Numerous different characters have been unmasked as Ghostface over the years, including Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) in 1996's Scream, Mrs. Loomis/Debbie Salt (Laurie Metcalf) and Mickey Altieri (Timothy Olyphant) in Scream 2, Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) in Scream 3 and, most recently, Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) and Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) in Scream 4.

2022's Scream is written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. It is the second Scream film to not be written by Kevin Williamson, as well as the first to not be directed by horror legend Wes Craven, the latter of whom passed away in 2015. Despite not penning the script, Williamson is attached to the new film as an executive producer.

Scream slashes its way into theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
