The team behind the upcoming fifth installment of the Scream franchise shared a behind-the-scenes photo of the weapon that has become synonymous with the films. The official Twitter account for the Scream movies posted a photo of a bloody knife sitting in a pool of red liquid, along with the caption, "There were only a few drops of [blood] to clean up on set." The post also featured the snarky warning, "Official sources stated that is false and misleading."RELATED: Even Scream's Stars Thought the Film Would Be Titled 5cream

The photo of the knife was posted about two weeks after Scream actor Courteney Cox celebrated the end of filming the fifth film by paying tribute to original Scream director Wes Craven on social media. At the time, Cox posted a photo of herself posing with Craven on the set of the first film.

"Scream just wrapped. This all started 25 years ago directed by the beloved Wes Craven. Walking back on the set 25 years later, I wasn't sure what to expect," she captioned the shot. "What I found was an incredible new cast and two uber-talented directors. I'm sure Wes will be so proud. Thank you [Kevin Williamson] for creating this legacy."

Craven directed the first four films in the Scream franchise, which was created by Williamson. Craven passed away in 2015 at age 76. The latest installment is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

It was also recently revealed that, like Craven, the new directors didn't reveal to the actors who the Ghostface killer was while they filmed. According to the film's producer William Sherak (via CinemaBlend), Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett gave the actors different drafts of the script so no one would really know who the murderer was until they saw the completed film.

While few plot details have been shared, a previously released synopsis revealed that the fifth installment -- titled Scream -- will follow a young woman who returns to her old hometown of Woodsboro, only to encounter horrific murder cases connected to an infamous masked serial killer. While the cast and crew were originally scheduled to start filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, back in May, production was pushed until September because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Scream will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and Marley Shelton as Deputy Judy Hicks. Cast newcomers include Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
