Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group announced that a sixth Scream movie had been greenlit following the box office success of 2022's Scream. "We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film," Paramount and Spyglass said in a joint statement. "We can't wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family."

Vanderbilt and Busick also stated, "Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the Scream story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor." Scream saw franchise mainstays, Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette reprise their respective roles as Gale Weathers, Sidney Prescott and Dewey Riley but so far, only Cox has been confirmed to return for the sixth film. Whether Campbell or Arquette will return as well has yet to be determined.

The franchise's fifth feature film, simply titled Scream, premiered in theaters on Jan. 14, with original Scream (1996) writer Kevin Williamson serving as an executive producer. 2022's Scream saw Sidney Prescott return to her hometown of Woodsboro 25 years after the events of the first film as a new killer targets a group of teenagers. Like the films before it, the identity of Ghostface has been kept tightly under wraps even from the actors, who were each given differing scripts in order to keep the killer's identity a mystery. With a mix of old and new cast members, this is the first film in the franchise not directed by Craven, who passed in August 2015.

"Nearly 25 years ago, when I wrote Scream and Wes Craven brought it to life, I could not have imagined the lasting impact it would have on you, the fans," Williamson said when filming wrapped in November 2020. "I'm excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again. I believe Wes would've been so proud of the film that [co-directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin] are making."

Scream 6 hits theaters on March 31, 2023.
