The upcoming sixth cinematic entry in the Scream franchise will feature the most brazen iteration of Ghostface yet, according to co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin.

Total Film Magazine explains that Scream VI features a version of Ghostface who is far more aggressive than his predecessors. After all, the slasher sequel's official teaser trailer shows the masked killer pouncing on Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) in a crowded subway train, making it clear that he has no problem striking even when surrounded by potential witnesses. The full-length trailer drove this point home, showing Ghostface attacking in a busy corner store and even wielding the clerk's shotgun. "We wanted to make this really different, while still having all the stuff you love," Bettinelli-Olpin told the publication. "Having a bolder, more brazen Ghostface was a big part of that."

It remains to be seen if Scream VI will buck other franchise trends as far as Ghostface is concerned. For instance, one commonality between all five Scream films thus far is that the killer, or killers, are always characters introduced in that particular film -- there's never been a returning character behind the mask. On that note, almost every Scream film so far has actually featured two killers, with the only exception being 2000's Scream 3, in which there was only one.

Ghostface Returns to Theaters in 2023

At any rate, Scream VI is officially slated to bow in theaters later this year on March 10. The film picks up after the 2022 legacy sequel Scream, which served to soft-reboot the franchise with a new cast of main characters. In addition to the aforementioned Brown as Mindy, Scream VI marks the return of Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter and Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin. Additionally, longtime franchise star Courteney Cox reprises her role as Gale Weathers, while Scream 4 alum Hayden Panettiere reprises her role as Kirby Reed.

Behind the scenes, Scream VI also marks the return of Scream (2022) directors Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett alongside screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Original franchise co-creator Kevin Williamson is back as an executive producer. An official synopsis for Scream VI reads as follows: "Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter. In Scream VI, Melissa Barrera ("Sam Carpenter"), Jasmin Savoy Brown ("Mindy Meeks-Martin"), Mason Gooding ("Chad Meeks-Martin"), Jenna Ortega ("Tara Carpenter"), Hayden Panettiere ("Kirby Reed") and Courteney Cox ("Gale Weathers") return to their roles in the franchise alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving."

Scream VI slashes its way into theaters on March 10.
