After facing delays stemming from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, principal photography on the fifth Scream film has officially come to an end, with the production confirming its title and release date.

The upcoming slasher sequel has confirmed previous reports that its theatrical release date has been pushed from August 2021 to January 2022. Franchise creator Kevin Williamson, who serves as an executive producer on the new film, announced that the sequel will simply be titled Scream while sharing a pair of behind-the-scenes photos from the production on his social media platforms.

"That's a wrap on Scream, which I'm excited to announce is the official title of the next film!" Williamson posted. "Nearly 25 years ago, when I wrote Scream and Wes Craven brought it to life, I could not have imagined the lasting impact it would have on you, the fans. I'm excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again. I believe Wes would’ve been so proud of the film that Matt and Tyler are making."

Originally intended to begin filming this past May, the global health crisis pushed back the start of principal photography to September, with the main cast joined by newcomers. While several crew members tested positive for COVID-19, production was able to proceed with heightened health precautions on set.

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
