Scream veteran David Arquette, who has played Dwight "Dewey" Riley since the original 1996 film, says that an abandoned aspect of the character is set to make a comeback in the upcoming fifth film, due for release in January.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Arquette revealed that Dewey's limp returns in 2022's Scream. After being non-fatally stabbed in the original Scream, Dewey walked with a limp throughout 1997's Scream 2 and 2000's Scream 3. In Scream 2, the character of Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) questions why Dewey limps despite having been stabbed in the back, with Dewey explaining that the abnormality is the result of a severed nerve.

However, in 2011's Scream 4, Dewey's limp is miraculously gone, with no explanation as to how or why. At the time, many fans simply assumed that Dewey's severed nerve had somehow healed in the 11 years between Scream 3 and Scream 4. "Dewey's had a rough life of it, and in the fourth Scream, they wanted me to get rid of his limp," Arquette told EW. "But he's got the limp back; I can give you that much!" Still, it remains to be seen if the new Scream film will actually explain how Dewey's limp went away in the first place -- or how it came back.

Despite simply being titled Scream, the franchise's newest film serves as a direct sequel to Scream 4. Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox -- who have appeared in all four films thus far -- are slated to reprise their roles as Dewey, Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers-Riley, respectively. Meanwhile, Marley Shelton will reprise her Scream 4 role of Judy Hicks. Of course, Roger L. Jackson will also reprise his role as the voice of Ghostface, having most recently voiced the killer in Scream: Resurrection, the third and final season of the Scream television series.

The new cast members joining the Scream franchise in the fifth film include Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Dylan Minnette, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sonia Ben Ammar, Mikey Madison, Mason Gooding and Kyle Gallner. The film's newly released trailer reveals that this time around, a new Ghostface killer is targeting the relatives of the original killers. Previous Ghostface killers include Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) in 1996's Scream; Mrs. Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) and Mickey Altieri (Timothy Olyphant) in Scream 2; Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) in Scream 3; and Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) and Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin) in Scream 4.

The new Scream movie hits theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
