The live-action Scooby-Doo spinoff Daphne & Velma just dropped a trailer that gives us a sneak peek into the characters' lives before Mystery Inc.
In the footage, Daphne tells her internet bestie Velma she'll be transferring to her high-tech high school. Everything seems cool until students start disappearing into lockers only to return "zombified." The friends decide to investigate, and high jinks ensue.
Scooby-Doo fans will pick up on some not-so-subtle nods to the source material, such as suspicious janitors, questions of "Who's behind this?" and Velma's signature "jinkies."
Although Daphne & Velma doesn't seem like an R-rated James Gunn film, it does show signs of a feel-good story about friendship. Daphne and Velma have always been quite different -- Velma is the traditional geek stereotype while Daphne is the "cool girl" -- but these two have a bond that hasn't been explored all that much yet. This film clearly sets out to change that.
The movie is produced by Ashley Tisdale of Disney Channel fame, along with her sister Jennifer Tisdale. Their company, Blondie Girl Productions, is focused on telling female-lead stories. It starts Shades of Blue star Sarah Jeffrey as Daphne and Last Man Standing star Sarah Gilman as Velma.
Daphne and Velma will be released on May 22 through Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
