They’ve already tackled the neo-Western thriller with No Country for Old Men, the modern Greek epic in O Brother, Where Art Thou and, most recently, the gritty Western with True Grit — all of which gained the Coen Brothers multiple Academy Award nominations and wins. So, what genre’s next for Joel and Ethan? A recent interview might just give us that answer — and it’s quite scary.
Empire asked the brothers whether they would ever consider doing a “full-on horror” film, to which Ethan replied, “Funny you should ask, yes, we’re working on a couple of scripts now, one of which it would be fair to call a full-on horror movie. Frances McDormand is the monster.”
The site says that the latter statement was said in a joking manner, since McDormand is married to Ethan’s brother. However, they also claim that the first part definitely sounded serious. In all honestly, a Coen Brothers horror film might just completely revitalize the genre. These guys know how build tension like almost no one else in the business. The scene in No Country where Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh asks the gas attendant to flip a coin ranks as one of the most terrifying moments in movie history. That’s real horror right there. Not pop out of nowhere, gut you and kill you, but hold your breath, heart-pounding, intense fear horror.
What do you all think? What should the Coen’s next, most-likely-to-be-nominated-for-an-Oscar-too film should be?
