Paramount Pictures has debuted the first action-packed trailer for "Ghost in the Shell," the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s cyberpunk saga.
Although we've seen flashes of some of the footage in a series of cryptic teasers, here it's given context as we're introduced to Scarlett Johansson as The Major, a one-of-a-kind cyborg searching for clues to her past, and a connection to humanity, while fighting cyber criminals as the leader of Section 9.
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “Ghost in the Shell” follows Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
Although it's based on Shirow’s manga, which debut in 1989, "Ghost in the Shell" isn't a direction adaptation of any one story in the saga, but rather, in the words of executive producer Michael Costigan, “a portal into this universe.”
Directed by Rupert Sanders the film stars Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Beat Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Pitt, Kaori Momoi, Rila Fukushima, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo.
“Ghost in the Shell” opens March 31, 2017.
