Despite some Marvel fans feeling like Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame was unfair, Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson shared why she liked that end for her character.

Johansson described her Marvel Cinematic Universe character's fate as just in an interview with Total Film, stating, "I didn't feel the character needed to be vindicated. When we finished Avengers: Endgame, I felt good about the work that we did. I felt that unless we were going to go on a deep dive – which this film, [Black Widow], is... I thought, 'OK, she's...'"

However, Johansson stopped that particular sentence and instead added, "I love Natasha. She's had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice. It seemed very in character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. She's made peace with that, and, in some ways, has known that's her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way. When you look back on the films, that's in there. All the films have led her to that choice -- or to be able to make that choice; or for it to be a choice."

Black Widow met her end in Avengers: Endgame when she sacrificed herself to retrieve the Soul Stone. The MCU scene sees the Avenger sent back in time with Hawkeye to acquire the Soul Stone; however, they learn that the stone requires a sacrifice to be obtained. Hawkeye and Black Widow fight over who will offer themselves, with Black Widow ultimately losing her life to preserve Hawkeye's so that he can live to support his family.

With Natasha Romanoff's fate sealed in Endgame, Johansson admitted that she was unsure what was left of the character to be told in a solo movie. Johansson felt the movie would need to "find the heartbeat of what this character's journey has been." Delving into the character's background helped to ground Black Widow for Johansson, and supplied a new story to investigate with the character. Johansson called Black Widow a "very different film for Marvel, while still having all that great Marvel stuff that people have come to expect and love."

Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
