Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has teased that Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch is still alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans were left shocked when the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured the apparent death of the Scarlet Witch. The character was shown using her chaos magic in the film's third act to bring down Mount Wundagore, destroying all copies of the Darkhold across the multiverse, but also burying herself under the mountain in the process. However, Feige recently hinted to Variety that Scarlet Witch is not as dead as fans may think. "I don’t know that we saw her under rubble?" he said. "I saw a tower coming down and a little red flash. I don’t know what that means."

Olsen's first appearance as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch was a brief cameo in the post-credits scene for 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She returned with supporting roles in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). She also headlined the 2021 Disney+ limited series WandaVision opposite Paul Bettany's Vision.

"There really is so much more to explore. We still haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics," Feige told Variety, referencing Scarlet Witch's rich comics history. "Anything’s possible in the multiverse! We’ll have to see."

Elizabeth Olsen Is Open to Returning as Scarlet Witch

While Scarlet Witch's live-action future remains shrouded in mystery, she will appear in Season 2 of the animated Disney+ series What If...? with Olsen returning to voice the character. The actor has also mentioned that she would continue to reprise the character as long as Marvel committed to moving Scarlet Witch's story forward. "I think I would," Olsen replied when asked if she would welcome the chance to return to the MCU. "But it really needs to be a good story. I think these films are best when it's not about creating content, but about having a very strong point of view — not because you need to have a three-picture plan."

Some Scarlet Witch fans were expecting Marvel Studios to announce a solo film featuring the character at Disney's recent D23 Expo and were furious when Marvel's presentation came and went with nary a whisper about the character's MCU future. Marvel did not go to D23 empty-handed though as it debuted trailers for Secret Invasion, starring Samuel L. Jackson, and the upcoming Halloween special Werewolf By Night while confirming that WandaVision director Matt Shakman will direct the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
