Mutant relationships have been tense lately. Aside from going to war with the champions of Arakko most recently, there is also a brand new interstellar empire to consider, and it has ties much closer to home than most people are aware of. Abigail Brand has taken it upon herself to reinvent S.W.O.R.D. as the first and foremost space faring organization to represent Earth, and by extension the official mutant space program. Diplomatic endeavors have begun, and the representative of what might be the most important government in the Marvel universe has some serious issues to address, all hinging on the relationship between two of the most powerful mutants in the world.

Magneto has come for an inspection of the newly re-purposed and repaired S.W.O.R.D. space station, as well as to offer his and Krakoa's services to the organization in any way he can, including moving the massive facility into its proper orbit. Abigail gives Magneto a tour of the station while they wait out the clock, anticipating an incredible show when The Six take on an exploratory mission later that day. The two discuss the most immediate concerns they have on their way to the diplomatic suite, aptly nicknamed the "Stranger Room." There they find Frenzy welcoming Paibok of the Kree/Skrull Alliance to the station with a round of ceremonial combat, both seeming to enjoy the sparring session. Paibok compliments the setup, and Frenzy asks if his pending recommendation might mean a visit from Emperor Hulkling in the near future, but Paibok is sure that won't happen anytime soon for complicated reasons.

A large part of the complication is due to Magneto's relationship with the Scarlet Witch. Abigail explains to Erik that Krakoa's declaration of Wanda Maximoff an enemy-of-the-state is a problem for the young emperor, who also happens to be the son-in-law of the Scarlet Witch. Magneto can only avert his gaze and mutter to himself, calling Wanda "the Pretender." Paibok says that Wanda, who he refers to as "the Ghost-mother of the Court Wizard," is held highly in the emperor's regard, especially taking into account her time as an Avenger. Emperor Hulkling also considers Magneto's view of her a great shame, bringing a scowl across the elder mutant's face when he hears this.

Magneto and Scarlet Witch have both done some heavy damage in the past, both to the world at large and mutant kind, but the near constant string of revelations and tribulations that Wanda has been at the center of weigh much heavier than the sins of the man who for decades believed he was her father. Wanda was directly responsible for all but a small fraction of mutants losing their powers during M Day, which itself followed her remaking reality after suffering a complete mental breakdown in House of M. Besides these two massive events caused solely by one out of control mutant, it later came to light that Wanda was in fact not ever a mutant at all, but rather she and Quicksilver had developed their powers as a byproduct of radical experiments performed on them in their infancy. To add insult to injury, they were never Magneto's children, either, though they had all believed that lie for years, and the truth of that particular matter quite possibly hurt more than anything else.

It's understandable that Magneto would have such deep seated and complicated feelings towards Scarlet Witch, although it doesn't seem like he's entirely opposed to the idea of a reconciliation. He's gone as far as to email her, knowing that she is currently serving on the staff of the Strange Academy in New Orleans, and from what little readers are able to glean from his message, it doesn't sound like there is a terrible amount of animosity in his heart towards her.

Then again, the subject is incredibly touchy, and tone isn't always well-interpreted from the written word. Hopefully whatever comes of this won't be yet another tragedy, because if it does, it's going to reach a lot further than these things have in the past.
