The Avengers, like many superhero teams, have almost always had a great sense of camaraderie. Beyond being simple teammates, many Avengers maintain strong personal bonds with each other, such as Hawkeye and the Scarlet Witch. This friendship was severely tested when the Scarlet Witch killed Hawkeye and later brought him back to life.

Clint Barton died in 2004's Avengers #502, by Brian Michael Bendis, David Finch, Danny Miki, Frank D'Armata, Albert Deschesne and Richard Starkings. At the time, the Scarlet Witch was suffering from a nervous breakdown, unintentionally unleashing her reality-warping powers on her own team.

Enemies such as Ultron and the Kree appeared out of nowhere, while Avengers such as the Vision, Ant-Man and Jack of Hearts all died, due to Wanda's breakdown. In the midst of the carnage, Hawkeye was shot in the back, lighting his quiver on fire. In one final sacrifice, Hawkeye used a Kree jetpack to crash straight into the aliens' warship, destroying it.

While Wanda did not directly kill Clint, her breakdown caused the tragedy. Hawkeye's death was even more tragic in consideration of his longtime friendship with Wanda, ever since 1965's Avengers #16, by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, Stan Goldberg and Art Simek. The two Avengers shared a close personal history, including a brief romantic attraction. Killing off Wanda's loved ones, such as the Vision and Hawkeye underscored the extent of her downfall.

It wasn't until 2005's House of M #3, by Bendis, Olivier Coipel, Tim Townsend, Frank D'Armata and Chris Eliopoulos, that Hawkeye returned, thanks again to the Scarlet Witch. Wanda had altered reality so that mutants were the dominant species on Earth and everyone had the life they wanted. As a result, Hawkeye was alive, and a member of the human resistance movement.

Clint had no memory of his past life, until his memories were restored by Emma Frost. These memories hit Clint pretty hard, realizing that he'd been killed by one of his closest friends and teammates. Embittered by the truth, Hawkeye resolved to confront the Scarlet Witch.

Before trying to kill her, Clint angrily demanded to know why the Scarlet Witch would kill him, stating that he loved Wanda and would have died for her. Ultimately, however, Wanda grew even more unstable, erasing Clint from existence. Yet, by the time reality was restored, Hawkeye's uniform was found pinned to the walls of Avengers Mansion. This was a clear sign that Clint was still alive, thanks to the Scarlet Witch.

Hawkeye refused to return to superheroics until he got some answers. Clint searched for Wanda in 2007's New Avengers #26, by Bendis, Alex Maleev, Richard Starkings and Albert Deschesne. In this issue, Clint tracked Wanda to a village in Eastern Europe, finding that she had no memory of who she was before.

After the two spent the night together, Clint finally elected to resume his heroic activities. Clint became Ronin and joined the New Avengers before eventually taking up the Hawkeye mantle once again. Significantly, Hawkeye was present when Wanda regained her memories in 2011's Avengers: The Children's Crusade #6, by Allan Heinberg, Jim Cheung, Mark Morales, John Livesay, Dave Meikis, Justin Ponsor and Cory Petit.

Since then, it seems that Clint and Wanda have made up, resuming their old friendship. In 2012's Avengers vs. X-Men #7, by Matt Fraction, Olivier Coipel, Mark Morales, Laura Martin and Chris Eliopoulos, Hawkeye sacrificed himself to save Wanda. When a Phoenix-possessed Emma Frost tried to attack Wanda, Clint distracted her so that Wanda could escape. Wanda was horrified to see Clint burned so badly, which speaks to the love and friendship they still shared. While neither Hawkeye nor the Scarlet Witch has been an active Avenger for some time, they still have one of the closer friendships among the team's classic members.
