Thanos The Mad Titan is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Ok, he’s been coming for a while now, but it’s a really long way. If the latest trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is anything to go by, the Big Bad to end all Big Bads is going to land with a bang and change the MCU forever. The trailer is the first proper look at Thanos in action on the Big Screen. We’ve seen him cameo in the post-credits scenes of a few movies now, as well as a cameo in the first Guardians of the Galaxy; but here, we see him stroll onto Earth, punch Iron Man and steal the Infinity Stones for himself.

This is also an evolution, of sorts, of the look of Thanos. When he first appeared at the end of 2012’s Avengers, he was played -- albeit briefly -- by Damion Poitier instead of Josh Brolin, who has played him in every significant appearance since. It’s also fair to say that the CGI has improved in the last five years, as The Mad Titan looked better than ever. That’s not to say his appearance wasn’t entirely meme-worthy, however, which is why CBR is here to bring you the 15 Most Savage Thanos Memes!

15 HAT PROBLEMS

Perhaps the first thing people noticed in the Infinity War trailer is that Thanos is without his usual costume. The Mad Titan has appeared in countless comics since his first appearance in 1973, and he’s almost always wearing some form of headpiece, usually his crown like a cap that also sometimes serves as eyebrows? Hey, it’s comics.

When he turned up on Earth in the trailer, however, he was hatless, which led to many fans taking to the meme stream in an effort to help solve this problem. Here, writer Chip Zdarsky has gone for a cute beret, which really brings out the Mad Titan’s softer side, but at the same time makes him look a little like Bruce Willis? There were many more choices of headwear that fans picked for Thanos, but they all just proved that the guy can pull off any look.

14 TIME WAITS FOR NO TITAN

By the time Thanos shows up in Infinity War, it will have been six years since his first appearance in the credits of 2012’s Avengers. It’s a long time, and his little smirk back at the camera was the start of a long road for the Mad Titan, as well as for the fans that have been looking forward to his inevitable massive throwdown.

His cameo was also an indication of the direction that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would take, as Thanos showing up more than likely meant that the Avengers were heading toward what is commonly regarded as the greatest Marvel Event in the publisher's long history: The Infinity Gauntlet. Sure enough, since then almost every movie has introduced a new mystical object that somehow contains the essence of one of the all-powerful Infinity Stones, which Thanos can be seen collecting in the Infinity War trailer.

13 THUMBOS

Now you can make your very own Thanos action figure, and recreate the epic trailer for Avengers: Infinity War! All you need is your thumb and a purple marker, and with a little artistic flair, you can carry around your very own mini-Mad Titan wherever you go. With a little more time and skill, you can probably put the rest of your fingers to use, and draw the rest of the Infinity War cast on those too, for the fully immersive experience.

All that aside, there was more than just a passing resemblance between Thanos and a giant purple thumb. Despite that, he still managed to be scary and an imposing presence in the trailer, living up to the six years of hype the characters had leading up to this, his big moment.

12 WHO WOULD WIN

Without having access to any spoilers of any kind, we can still safely assume that by the end of the fourth Avengers movie, Thanos will have been defeated and the Earth will be saved. Just who will be sacrificed in the meantime, and just what price will be paid for that victory remains to be seen, and as with any superhero movie, we can’t wait to see just how they save the day.

There’s no denying that Thanos is the greatest threat the Avengers have ever faced, which is probably why it will take the combined might of almost every MCU hero introduced to date to bring him down. That’s only fair, as Thanos is a cosmic-level threat in the comics too, and with all of the Infinity Stones at his disposal, he’s basically a God.

11 TROLLING THE TITAN

With the rumors still circling about Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment arm, fans have been driving themselves crazy at the prospect of the majority of the Marvel properties falling under the House of Mouse. With the potential purchase, Disney would own the rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four franchises, which means Wolverine and Deadpool could soon be Avengers.

What the future holds for the movies is anyone’s guess, but pretty soon this meme may be more realistic than anyone dared dream. Ryan Reynolds has done such a good job of bringing an accurate portrayal of the Merc With a Mouth to the big screen that this would absolutely be the sort of thing he would do if he were faced with the mighty threat of Thanos.

10 DOUBLE DUTY

When it was announced that the actor playing Thanos would be Josh Brolin, people were excited. The Goonies and Men in Black 3 actor has been in superhero movies before, playing the title character in Jonah Hex, but this would be his first role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not long after, Deadpool himself announced in the post-credits scene of his movie that the sequel would star Cable, the time-traveling X-Man and regular partner of Wade Wilson.

It made perfect sense that Cable would be in Deadpool 2, but the only question then was who would play him? It would take someone with a grizzled, tough guy demeanor, someone like Josh Brolin actually. It’s a good job the man likes to be kept busy because he’s taken on both roles, meaning not only will he be Thanos in the Avengers movies, but Cable in Fox’s Deadpool franchise.

9 FATHER FIGURE

With all of the hype around the Infinity War trailer, you could be forgiven for forgetting just how ingrained Thanos already is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only will the movie be the character’s fourth big screen appearance, but his family has already played a pretty significant role in the larger universe.

Gamora and Nebula were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, and it was soon made clear that these two characters were not only sisters but the daughters of Thanos. The Mad Titan loomed over the proceedings in that first Guardians movie as the orchestrator behind the scenes, but seeing as he was the driving factor for Drax’s motivations as well as Ronan the Accuser, not to mention Gamora and Nebula, it’s safe to say he played a pretty important part.

8 PROBLEM SOLVER

Thanos is nothing if not resourceful, and we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw this exchange play out between him and the God of Thunder in Avengers: Infinity War. Thor is unfortunately without his hammer thanks to Hela -- as seen in this year’s Thor: Ragnarok -- but we can’t see him being without a weapon for too long.

No one, not even Thanos, would be able to lift Mjolnir, although who’s to say how powerful he will become once he wields the Infinity Gauntlet? Once the mighty glove is complete with all of the Infinity Stones, the wearer is practically a God, meaning surely he could do just about anything he wanted to do. Aside from Thor (and Hela halting it in mid-air), we’ve only seen Vision lift Mjolnir before, although Steve Rogers managed to shift it a fraction. Could Thanos be the first villain to truly wield it?

7 PAWN STAR

As soon as Thanos appeared in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, a meme was born, with fans comparing his look to everyone from Bruce Willis to Hank Hill. Here, though, was one of the most common comparisons of all, picturing Thanos next to Rick Harrison, one of the stars of History Channel’s Pawn Stars.

There’s definitely a resemblance, and it’s pretty funny to imagine Thanos giving up on his epic cosmic quest to obtain the Godlike powers of the Infinity Stones and instead settling down to own a pawn shop in Las Vegas. Hell, he’s been a farmer in the comics, so why not a small business owner, too? It may not be as glamorous as conquering the universe, but it’s a way to make a living, those golden Infinity Gauntlets aren’t cheap, you know.

6 OWNING IT

The Infinity Gauntlet is a good look. The sparkling golden glove with inlaid gems is pretty spectacular, truth be told, and that’s even before you find out about the near-omnipotent powers that it comes with. It's really no wonder that Thanos talked about it bringing a smile to his face in the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War.

His quest for the fabled Gauntlet is a well-known one in Marvel comics. It took a long time for him to acquire all the gems, but when he did, one of his first acts was to wipe out half of all sentient life in the universe. Thankfully, the combined might of all the heroes of the Marvel Universe brought him down and reversed his evil deeds, but if that’s anything to go by his appearance in the MCU is certainly nothing to smile about.

5 FAIRY TALE

Aside from being a convincingly terrifying threat in the trailer, when Thanos showed up in the Avengers: Infinity War sneak peek, many fans couldn’t help but be reminded of someone else. To be honest, they couldn’t help but be reminded of many people, as this meme list proves.

One of those comparisons was between Thanos and another imposing ogre, albeit one who hasn’t got plans to take over the universe (that we know of): Shrek. Yes, if you change the skin color from purple to green and add some comical ear stalks, the Mad Titan bears more than a passing resemblance to the swamp-dwelling hero of Far Far Away. If only there was a talking donkey in the Marvel Universe, and we may get an epic reunion.

4 TITAN BAE

Thanos showed up in the Avengers Infinity War trailer and made taking over the world look easy. With what looks like minimal effort, he acquired two Infinity Stones, and time will tell just how many more he gets before the end of the movie. With such stylish flair as that, there was only one comparison to be made: Thanos was the new Salt Bae.

This hilarious mashup makes for a pretty great illustration and is exactly how Thanos comes across in the trailer. He even talks about how this all brings a smile to his face, which just proves that he’s having as much fun as someone can by taking over the world. If the real Salt Bae has shown us anything, it’s that by adding a little flair to everyday tasks, you can make anything glamorous, be it adding salt to a steak or conquering the galaxy.

3 DISTRACTIONS

We’ve been waiting on Thanos a long time at this point, and with nearly six years between his first appearance and his arrival in 2018, fans have been wondering just what took him so long. His announcement in the mid-credits stinger of Avengers: Age of Ultron that he’ll “do it himself” implied that his arrival was imminent, but that was nearly three years ago.

As we saw at the end of Thor: Ragnarok, he looks to have acquired quite a large spaceship, implying that it needs to be that massive to hold his gargantuan cosmic army, so many that took a while to sort out. Throw in the fact that he had to get that fancy gauntlet of his made, while sitting around in a space throne looking menacing and the guy has been pretty busy.

2 THANOS THE MAD SIMPSON

Another crossover made possible by a merger of Disney and Fox, we could soon be seeing The Simpsons in the Marvel cinematic universe! Ok, maybe not, but we were certainly never expecting to see Spider-Man in an Avengers film either, and look how that turned out.

Despite Thanos talking about how the Infinity Gauntlet makes him smile, we can’t help but notice how surly he looks in the trailer, and when it comes to grumpy father figures (he’s Gamora and Nebula’s dad at least) no one compares to Homer J. Simpson. We can even hear Thanos letting out a “D’oh!” when his plans are inevitably foiled by the likes of Captain America. Following the mashup to its logical conclusion, that would make Marge Mistress Death, Gamora, Drax and Nebula and Lisa, Bart and Maggie, and Adam Warlock the closest thing to Homer’s adversary: Ned Flanders.

1 RAISIN HELL

From a giant grape to a California Raisin, Thanos has been compared to pretty much every purple thing you can imagine at this point, which is still better than being compared to Ivan Ooze like Apocalypse was when the last X-Men movie came out. Still, it’s easy to see how this comparison came about, as Thanos’ chin does look rather more wrinkly that we were expecting, and his skin color a little more pink than purple.

Let’s face it, we’re bound to have a little fun at the big guy’s expense, but the Infinity War trailer was amazing. Seeing Thanos finally throw down with the heroes of the MCU is the realization of a franchise over a decade in the making, and promises to be every bit as good as all of the hype piled on it. Welcome to Earth, Thanos, we can’t wait to see what you do.
