Savage Avengers Introduces Venom's Biggest, Most Powerful Form Yet

Conan Savage Avengers

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Savage Avengers #4 by Gerry Duggan, Mike Deodato Jr., Frank Martin and Travis Lanham, in stores now.

Absolute Carnage and the main Venom title aren't the only comic series currently featuring the Venom symbiote. When the Savage Avengers series was first announced, Marvel revealed Venom would join the new team of superheroes to fight new threats alongside Wolverine, the Punisher, Elektra, Brother Voodoo and Conan the Barbarian. However, the character's inclusion was put into question when another symbiote surfaced first in Savage Avengers #2.

This symbiote was one that had long been trapped in the Savage Land, before it was eventually freed by Conan. At the time, it was theorized that the Savage Avengers roster would include this ancient symbiote instead of Venom. However, in Savage Avengers #4, the Venom symbiote finally and truly joins the fight.

And better yet, it appears with its biggest, most powerful form yet.

Since the start of Savage Avengers, the evil sorcerer Kulan Gath has been working to raise a monster known as Jhoatun Lau. Also called the Marrow God, Jhoatun Lau is an ancient, cosmic being whose hunger can ever be satiated. Only once he has consumed enough (read: the Earth) will it reach its full size and potential. Therefore, in order for the Marrow God to feast, Kulan Gath transports him to a city, where it will be able to eat as much as it likes.

Thanks to Brother Voodoo's powers, the Savage Avengers are able to follow Gath and his monster -- but once they arrive, they are shocked to discover that the monster has already grown to the size of a small building. Luckily, the newly assembled team of superheroes get reinforcements of their own when the Venom symbiote crashes the party, flying down from the sky. But this isn't just Venom as we are used to seeing him. No, this Venom is just as big as the Marrow God, and has taken on the shape of a dragon.

Clearly, we've never seen the Venom symbiote like this before. Sure, in the pages of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Venom series, we already saw a dragon symbiote in the form of the Grendel. What's more, that series also showed the extended potential of the symbiote when it grew its own wings. However, this is the first time Venom himself has taken on the size of a building and the shape of a dragon. So how can that be?

Well, the narration for the issue informs us that this massive transformation is due to the cosmic radiation emanating from Jhoatun Lau. Therefore, it appears as if Venom's just gotten a cosmic upgrade thanks to the ancient god he's currently fighting. It's likely that this is a temporary power-up, and that Venom will shrink back down to his regular size when all is said done.

However, for now, the symbiote is more monstrous and savage than ever before. And with Venom now the size of a building like his opponent, Savage Avengers has just set the stage for an epic, Kaiju-sized brawl.

Savage Avengers #5 goes on sale September 4.
