The Naruto spinoff light novel telling Sasuke's story is set to receive a manga adaptation in October 2022.
Initially reported by Anime News Centre, Sasuke Retsuden, also known as Sasuke's Story—The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust, is one of the most popular Naruto spinoffs to date. Taking place after Naruto Shippuden and before Boruto: Naruto Next Generation, the story focuses on Sasuke's journey to save his best friend. The light novel was released in Japanese in August 2019, with its official English translation available on Nov. 22, 2022. The manga will be illustrated by Kimura Shingo.
Sasuke Retsuden is a light novel written by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Masahi Kishimoto. It takes place after Sasuke's best friend, Naruto, falls ill with a chakra-blocking illness. In search of a cure, Sasuke poses as a prisoner to infiltrate Astronomy Research Institute. Alongside his old sensei, Kakashi, and his new wife, Sakura, Sasuke must find a way to heal Naruto before his illness puts the entirety of Konoha in danger.
As Naruto's best friend, Sasuke played a key role in both Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. Despite their relationship, the majority of the franchise has seen Sasuke acting as one of the series' major antagonists. After his older brother, Itachi, killed his entire clan, Sasuke is driven by his desire for revenge. Despite his bond with Naruto, Sasuke goes on to become the final villain of the series during the Fourth Shinobi War.
Sasuke eventually repents for his actions and goes back to Konoha. However, Sasuke Retsuden sees Sasuke fighting for Naruto instead of against him for the first time since the original Naruto series. Sasuke's role as a protagonist in the light novel allows for further development and redemption of his character after the events of Naruto: Shippuden.
Naruto (2002-2007) is a manga/anime series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The series has received multiple spinoffs and continuations, including Naruto: Shippuden (2007-2017) and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations (2017-). Currently, the combined anime series have released over 900 episodes total, with the Boruto anime still ongoing. The franchise has also created several original movies. With 250 million copies currently in circulation, Naruto is one of the most popular manga series ever created. Additionally, as one of the longest-running shonen series of all time, Naruto has become one of the "big three" in shonen anime, alongside Bleach and One Piece. 2022 marks the series' 20th anniversary.
The Sasuke Retsuden manga will be released on the Shonen Jump+ app on Oct. 23, 2022.
