The following contains spoilers for Chapter 5 of Naruto: Sasuke's Story -- The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust by Masashi Kishimoto, Jun Esaka, Shingo Kimura and Snir Aharon, now available in English from Viz Media.

One of the most contentious aspects of the Boruto era has always been the marriage between Sasuke and Sakura. Many were shocked to see them end up together as the Naruto series didn't offer any romantic chemistry, or nuance that could genuinely have them in a believable relationship. Yet the time-jump had them marrying, with Sarada as their daughter in Konoha.

Thankfully, despite the anime not fleshing them out more as a plausible couple, manga spinoffs have added some meat to the bones. Namely, Naruto: Sasuke's Story -- The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust, with Chapter 5 having them closer than ever on an undercover mission. As the couple continues to seek clues in a Redaku prison regarding a cure for Naruto's illness back home, though, it becomes clear that more spy stories with Sasuke and Sakura are needed, as they have a remarkable dynamic in the field.

Sasuke's Spinoff Manga Makes Sakura Like X-Men's Mystique

Sasuke, Sakura, and Sarada from Naruto

Sakura is pretending to be a nurse, reconciling intel from their former mentor, Kakashi, that links the case to the Sage of the Six Paths and his storage of all the Tailed Beasts from centuries ago. He apparently had a similar problem like Naruto with his chakra, which is why he came to Redaku and worked with the astronomer, Tataru. They ended up using cosmic dust from a meteor to heal the Sage (aka Hagoromo), so now Sakura and Sasuke want to locate the map to find the dust themselves.

In time, Sakura gets word about a diplomat, Fandal, coming over from Redaku's government. She learns he's here to find out about certain assets on behalf of the queen, so she lures him into a room, knocks him out and uses a substitution jutsu. She then shape-shifts into Fandal, impersonating him with this technique. It's quite amazing as she learns all his idiosyncrasies in seconds, nailing his voice and mannerisms akin to the X-Men villain in Mystique.

Sasuke's Story Makes Him a Master of Disguise Too

Sakura then reaffirms how good her rapport is with her husband. She has him shape-shift into Fandal's scepter, and they hold the meeting with the prison boss, Zansūru. He's a Dr. Frankenstein-like character, seemingly creating dinosaurs such as Menō for Redaku's army, who are sadly planning to infiltrate other regions. Sakura didn't expect such political conflict, so she has to now act in the best interest of all nations, piecing together intel for a report of her own.

It's why she distracts the boss, allowing Sasuke to transform and slip away into a special chamber to gain evidence. There, he uses chakra to attain a mold for the key-hole, then uses his Earth-technique to create a key from the ground. It's astounding how well he uses these talents, which nods to how he mined the rocks beneath to make and gift Sakura a wedding ring.

The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust is proving they're a dynamic duo, feeding off each other and coming off telepathic in how they know what the other is thinking. It does make up for the past where they didn't get much time together, while illustrating how they can use their abilities outside of war. Here, Sasuke's substitution has more guile rather than just transforming into a katana in battle, so this proves he knows about subtlety -- much like his beloved.

Sasuke and Sakura Could Be the Perfect Rangers

Now, this direction allows Sasuke to find feeding pens, suggesting mass breeding of raptors is going on and that Zansūru is running sick lab experiments a la Orochimaru. Chapter 5 ends here, but it has that Mr. and Mrs. Smith energy in how well the married couple mesh as infiltrators. They're a delight to see undercover, so it'd be fun for more spinoffs to ensue, with them going on missions to suss out future threats. It'd make up for Sakura being a housewife, which is the role others like Ino and Hinata play, making it seem like the series doesn't believe these powerful women are equipped for big cases.

This would course-correct and make the franchise feminist-forward, to the point they can even have Sarada join them, reinventing the Uchiha tribe as a pseudo-ANBU unit. The ANBU, after all, made Kakashi and Itachi (Sasuke's deceased older brother) bitter, so Sasuke's family can become a better offshoot of that. It'd give them quality time together to bond with a fun vibe as Sarada works with them, seeing how badass her parents truly are. She doesn't even need to tag along as she's accustomed to training with Kakashi and Naruto, so the married couple wouldn't be abandoning or neglecting their child. The point is that it gives them prominence as a couple, and agency in protecting the Hidden Leaf.

Sasuke and Sakura Still Need More Romance

Sakura sees Sasuke leave Konoha in Naruto

It's been endearing seeing Sasuke show Sakura more love in Heavenly Stardust, getting jealous over inmates fawning at the sight of her. Thus, as spies, he could learn more about how others view her and fall deeper in love. He does think she's his soulmate, after all, so he just has to show it. These spy missions and successes can further detail other personal stories, sharing their intimate thoughts on how they felt about each other as kids, filling in the time-gap in an organic way, per what's been done with Kiba and Tamaki.

It'd be quite sentimental and act as filler stories, reaffirming how they sparked their relationship and what was the catalyst for deciding they could start a family together. Honestly, there's no better time for this than when they're in the field with her chakra healing and his genjutsu powers -- i.e. when they're vulnerable and protecting each other, realizing how much they mean to each other. And ultimately, by wearing different skins and identities, they'll get to learn more about the outside world, making them better people and parents for when they return to the Land of Fire.
