Even though it's been years since Sarah Michelle Gellar slayed a vampire or saved the world from supernatural forces, she returned to her horror roots in one of this year's Super Bowl ads.
In the "Killer Skin" ad for Olay, Gellar and her friend are being chased by a masked man with a Freddy Kruger-esque claw hand.A fter hiding in a bedroom, Gellar's characters finds herself unable to unlock her phone with her face since her skincare regiment has improved her complexion so much.
With its mix of horror and humor, the ad strikes a tone that should be familiar to fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which frequently mixed disparate tones during its seven-year run.
Beyond Buffy, Gellar also starred in '90s teen horror films like Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer. After Buffy ended, she also appeared in The Grudge, The Grudge 2 and a pair of decidedly more kid-friendly Scooby-Doo movies, where she played Daphne Blake.
While Gellar's days as Buffy are likely over, there are currently two Buffy reboots in the works. In comics, BOOM! Studios just started publishing a new series that updates Buffy, Xander and Willow for the modern day. A new live action Buffy show is also being developed, and it is expected to star an African-American Slayer and take place after the end of the original Buffy series.
Created by Joss Whedon, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot will be helmed by Monica Uwusu-Breen. The series is predicted to debut in 2019, but an official release date has not yet been announced.
