The following contains spoilers for The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6, on sale now from DC Comics.

Thessaly, a fan-favorite Sandman character, makes a return in DC's The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6 before she sets off on a new adventure that will be continued in the upcoming Dead Boy Detectives spinoff.

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6 comes from writer James Tynion IV, artist Maria Llovet and letterer Simon Bowland. The issue opens by introducing a character named Jamie, an up-and-coming writer who is only somewhat enthused to be involved with penning a film adapation about a real-life murder case. He's brooding about the project when his next door neighbor, Thessaly, notices there's something different about him on this given day, despite the fact that they don't seem to have much of a preestablished relationship.

Sandman's Spinoff Series Brings Back a Fan-Favorite Character

Thessaly introduces herself as Lamia and invites Jamie over for tea. The two talk about the project and how Jamie plans to speak to some of the victim's college friends, which is when Thessaly suggests he just speaks directly to the deceased. She conjures a spell that supposedly should allow Jamie to talk to the dead; however, Jamie is instead consumed by a series of horrific images which ultimately kill him. "The writer had become enthralled in powers much larger than himself, and brought their prying eyes to her doorstep," narration text explains. "Now they were sure to have noticed her. They would seek her out, in an attempt to destroy anything that might perceive their machinations."

Thessaly's Adventures Continue in the Next Sandman Spinoff

The issue ends with Thessaly cleaning up the mess and declaring she's face whatever is coming for her head-on. When someone knocks on her door, she grabs a knife and gets ready to take on whoever may be on the other side. At the bottom of the final page, the issue reveals Thessaly's story will continue in The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives #1. Announced in September, Dead Boy Detectives is a new six-issue miniseries from writer Pornsak Pichetshote, artist Jeff Stokely, colorist Miquel Muerto and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. Launching in December, the synopsis reads, ""The Sandman Universe grows as two of its most beloved characters return to the spotlight! Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine have been detectives for decades—and dead best friends even longer. But their investigation into a Thai American girl’s disappearance from her Los Angeles home puts them on a collision course with new and terrifying ghosts that could give even a dead boy nightmares—including a bloodthirsty krasue. Even scarier than the ghosts? Though neither wants to admit it, the boys might be growing apart. And perilously close by to the boys’ adventure, Thessaly the witch finds herself held hostage by dangerous magics—both a threat to her life and an insult to her ego that simply will not go unanswered…"
