Though The Sandman is safe from the chopping block amid a wave of Netflix cancellations, the streaming service refuses to say new episodes of the hit series are part of a Season 2, according to one of the drama's stars.

During a sitdown at Fan Expo San Francisco, actor Mason Alexander Park stated why Netflix has been hesitant about branding upcoming installments of the show as Season 2 episodes, despite renewing the series this past November. According to Park, it's an intentional move by Netflix as they figure out the future of the series. "Netflix has not gone on record as calling it a Season 2, on purpose," Park said. "And so, I will, from now on and in the future, and possibly until the end of the universe not refer to it as Season 2 until we know what it is."

Additionally, Park confirmed filming for new episodes of The Sandman will begin this summer. "There is more Sandman coming in a really cool way and it can take many forms, so we're starting shooting in the summer and we're gonna tackle the next huge chunk of stories in however long that might take," they said. "And I'm really excited to share the format of what that might be with everybody eventually."

In The Sandman, Park plays Desire, the personification of desire itself and a sibling of Dream, aka Morpheus. The show, based on Neil Gaiman's DC comic series, chronicles the various people and places affected by Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, as he fixes the many cosmic and human mistakes he made throughout his existence. The cosmic being is captured and imprisoned for over a century, having to fix events caused by his absence.

The Sandman Returns for More Episodes

The Sandman has, so far, managed to survive a wave of recent cuts that has claimed shows like Warrior Nun, The Midnight Club, The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself and Inside Job. Nevertheless, Gaiman has assured fans of The Sandman Season 2 will proceed as planned. Additionally, he insisted recent issues between Netflix and Warner Bros. won't cause issues for the show either after unrest between the two parties was reported following its renewal.

Alongside Park, The Sandman features Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne and Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven. Gwendoline Christie, David Thewlis and Jenna Coleman also feature on the show as Lucifer Morningstar, John Dee and Johanna Constantine, respectively.

Fans can stream all episodes of The Sandman to date via Netflix.
