Writer Neil Gaiman revealed his adoration for one memorable scene from the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman.

In an interview with Variety, Gaiman and showrunner Allan Heinberg discussed their experiences transforming the beloved comic books into a television series, with Gaiman applauding the performance of actor David Thewlis as John Dee in Episode 5, "24/7." The writer said, "One of my favorite moments in the entire 10 episodes of The Sandman, which has moments in it that have made me cry, which has moments in it that I am awestruck by, which have moments that I'm proud of, but watching David Thewlis as John Dee wander into the kitchen at the back of the diner, get himself some ice cream, come around and eat it on the counter, while all this stuff is happening around him, is one of my favorite sequences."

Gaiman further praised the show's creators for faithfully translating one of the most iconic scenes of The Sandman comics into the Netflix series. "I need to tell [director Jamie Childs] it's just one of my favorite sequences," he continued. "It does so much, and nothing is said. David Thewlis goes and gets ice cream and it's both horrifying, awful and human."

Neil Gaiman Praises Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death

This wasn't the only scene in the show to make an impact on Gaiman. The beloved author previously expressed his delight with Kirby Howell-Baptiste's portrayal of Death in Episode 6, "The Sound of Her Wings." Gaiman revealed he was also excited to see the fans' reactions to Episode 6. "I want them to see Episode 6 after they've experienced Episode 5," he said. "It's like, Episode 4 takes them to Hell in a good way. Episode 5 puts them through Hell in a diner. Episode 6 is cleansing and forgiving and embracing and warming and beautiful, but you have to earn it."

While a second season of The Sandman hasn't been announced, Gaiman claimed he was fully supportive of a spinoff based on another fan-favorite character from Season 1 of The Sandman, Jenna Coleman's Johanna Constantine. One fan on social media additionally sent a message to Gaiman praising Episode 3, "Dream a Little Dream of Me," wherein Johanna assisted Morpheus in his search for one of his most important tools. The author claimed the fan wasn't the only one hoping to see the demon hunter return in future projects, with Gaiman writing, "You are not alone in this thought."

The Sandman is now available to stream on Netflix.
