The Sandman comic book creator Neil Gaiman has endorsed the cast of Netflix's series adaptation.

"So there are now a few answers to the casting questions," Gaiman said on Twitter. "For those who like mysteries, Sandman is huge, and the cast is enormous. And there are many mysteries remaining."

Gaiman also offered his quick thoughts on The Sandman's actors, describing Tom Sturridge as "perfect" for Morpheus, aka. Dream of the Endless. He went on to describe Asim Chadhry's portrayal of Abel as a "hilarious and tragic" figure locked in "a monstrous double act" with his brother, Cain (Sanjeev Bhaskar). Gaiman added casting Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Ruler of Hell, was "a delight," and swapping Lucien, the male chief librarian of Dream's realm in The Sandman comic books, for Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong) was "one of my favourite changes from the Sandman comic."

In addition, Gaiman introduced Charles Dance's character, Roderick Burgess, as "more than just a charlatan and a magician. He also blackmails people. And he captures the Lord of Dreams, while trying to do something else." Finally, Gaiman posted a photo of Boyd Holbrook, clarifying it was an image of the actor and not his character, the Corinthian, saying "it's something about the eyes." In the comics, the Corinthian has two rows of tiny jagged teeth in each of his eye sockets and typically hides them by wearing sunglasses.

As part of Netflix's announcement, Gaiman issued an official statement about The Sandman's casting: "For the last thirty-three years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head. I'm unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality. I can't wait until the people out there get to see what we've been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there. This is astonishing, and I'm so grateful to the actors and to all of The Sandman collaborators — Netflix, Warner Bros., DC, to Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, and the legions of crafters and geniuses on the show — for making the wildest of all my dreams into reality."

A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he's made during his vast existence.

Executive produced and co-written by Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer, Sandman will be the first-ever live-action adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series. Allan Heinberg will serve as the series' showrunner, executive producer and co-writer.
