San Diego Comic-Con recently announced that it's in-person July event has been cancelled for the second year in a row and will be virtual instead. In a statement released on Twitter, SDCC announced that despite the vaccine rollout for the coronavirus (COVID-19), July would still be too early to host an in-person gathering, especially for an event as large as San Diego Comic-Con. "For this reason, we have made the challenging decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as an in-person gathering until our 2022 dates, and once again hold this year's celebration as the free online Comic-Con@Home," the statement reads. Due to "limited financial resources," the online event will be reduced to a three-day virtual event from July 23-25.RELATED: Don't Expect San Diego Comic-Con To Happen in 2020 - Or 2021

In light of this decision to postpone the larger-scale event, SDCC also announced the decision to hold a "smaller, in-person event" in Nov. 2021 as a "safer alternative." The statement reads, "We are happy to announce that San Diego Comic Convention is planning to present a three-day in-person convention in San Diego in November." Specific details including attendance capacity as well as badge and ticket costs have not yet been confirmed.

The announcement also states that anyone whose badge was rolled over to the 2021 event "will have those badges automatically transferred to the 2022 event unless a refund is requested." A badge refund request can be submitted on the official Comic Con website. This decision comes a few weeks after the announcement that WonderCon's in-person event was cancelled as well, and would instead take place virtually over the course of two days in March.
