Samuel L. Jackson is arguably the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it might stand to reason Jackson knows a thing or two about the comic books serving as the basis of the MCU. According to the star, however, when it comes to comics, he's actually more of a DC fan.

“Well, I mean, we’re all -– actors are mercenaries," Jackson told the Happy Sad Confused podcast when asked about his loyalty to the MCU, and if he would ever consider starring in a DC film. "It’s kinda what we do, we act who we act for, but I don't know that I’m going to read a DC script that’s gonna make me go, 'Yeah, this is dope!'"

"I mean, I’m a comic book fan, so I’ve been reading comic books forever," Jackson said. "And truth be told, I don’t even read Marvel comic books -- I kinda look at ’em, and when I discovered myself as Nick Fury, I just happened to see myself and [say], 'What am I doing on this cover?' And that was it, I put the book back. I read DC Comics my whole life, you know."

Despite Jackson's professed longtime loyalty to DC, though, he did express fondness for one Marvel character amongst his DC favorites. "We all came through Superman, Batman, Silver Surfer -- Aquaman, I was a swimmer -- I was all about DC. But I don’t know what the thing is about them cinematically."

Podcast host Josh Horowitz then noted the DCEU films are "all over the place" and that Marvel Studios "has that real formula down ... most of the time." Jackson largely concurred, possibly indicating the more cohesive state of the MCU might make it a more attractive franchise to the actor.

Jackson has been part of the MCU since its inception with the release of Iron Man in 2008, appearing in the film's post credits scene as the modern-day Nick Fury. He's appeared in 11 Marvel Studios films, most recently 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home, and is expected to also be featured in the upcoming The Marvels and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Jackson will also star in the Secret Invasion series on Disney+, and has voiced his character in the animated Disney+ series What If...?.

The modern incarnation of the character was first introduced in Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Allred's Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #5 in 2001, and was later rendered by artist Bryan Hitch to resemble Jackson. The resemblance made Jackson an obvious casting choice in the MCU films.
