A handful of Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites were announced to get their own TV shows when Disney+ launched, including WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Hawkeye and Loki. Now, the latest addition to Marvel Studios' Disney+ lineup, a show centered on Nick Fury, will mark Samuel L. Jackson’s first regular role in a TV series. While he’s appeared in cameos on things like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, this show will be his first recurring role, and it’s fitting that it's a part he's become synonymous with.

Nick Fury has been an essential part of the MCU from the very beginning. His post-credits appearance in Iron Man set the stage for a franchise unlike any other, and he was not only a key figure in bringing the Avengers together, but he also played a huge role in solo films for various MCU characters, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel and, most recently, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Nick Fury in Infinity War

The MCU’s goal with Disney+ appears to be blending the movies seamlessly into TV, and a Nick Fury series is the perfect way to achieve that considering his role as not only a guiding force in the MCU but a force in connecting MCU characters and movies to each other. Giving Nick Fury a spotlight and an extended character arc also would delight fans of the character. He’s been with the MCU since the first movie, and out of the 23 MCU movies later, he's appeared in 11 of them, so giving him a TV show provides the perfect place to give him his own storyline, one he deserves.

A Nick Fury series would also give the opportunity for the MCU to expand his character. He has helped so many characters develop by means of his presence in their stand-alone movies, so it’s time to really get to know the man behind the Avengers, especially considering the reveal in the post-credits scene of Far From Home that called his whereabouts into question. There’s a lot of places the MCU can go with that cliffhanger, and there’s a lot of questions that need to be answered. A series is an ideal place to address all of those lingering questions, and give the character a spotlight he's yet to have on the big screen.

Jackson's first regular TV role being Nick Fury is also very fitting. While Jackson was a well-known, successful and beloved actor before his debut in the MCU, his role as the spy has proven iconic. From his first appearance in Iron Man to his return after Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Endgame at Tony Stark's funeral, Jackson has staked his claim as the backbone of the world's largest franchise, which only added to his already illustrious career.

While the other shows with MCU characters that premiered in the movies are starting to blur the movies and TV shows, the addition of a Nick Fury series will surely fill the gap and cement the MCU’s goal of expanding their universe to TV. He connected so many MCU films and characters to each other that it’s only fitting he also connects the movies and TV shows.
