As the fleshy face of the machines in the latest installment of the Terminator franchise and the latest action hero for director James Cameron in Avatar, Sam Worthington is making yet another move to turn himself into this generation’s Arnold Schwarzenegger*.
According to Production Weekly (via News in Film), Worthington is quite interested in landing the lead role in the forthcoming Commando reboot from writer and director David Ayers (Training Day, Harsh Times). Already a favorite of 20th Century Fox’s thanks to his work on Avatar, Worthington could easily fit the studio’s desire to retool Commando around a leaner, more stealth-oriented action star such as himself, as opposed to Schwarzenegger’s brawny hero seen in the original 1985 flick.
For now, consider Worthington’s casting to be tentative at best. But if he becomes Schwarzenegger’s Commando successor, how else might Worthington emulate the Aussie action icon in the future? Perhaps a career in American politics is in the cards?
(* = Okay, fine. Nobody can become this generation’s Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s way too dreamy.)
