Spider-Man and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi revealed which prominent enemy of Batman he'd like to bring into the upcoming DC Universe franchise.

Twitter user Jason Carvey Watcher (@freefromkenan) shared the details of his meeting with Raimi over the weekend. "Met Sam Raimi at [Texas Frightmare Weekend] today and asked him about his comments regarding his interest in directing a Batman movie in Gunn's DCU," he said. "The villain he'd most want to use? Ra's al Ghul." Of course, the Demon's Head is no stranger to the silver screen, thanks to Liam Neeson playing him in 2005's Batman Begins and 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.

Raimi, who has long desired to direct a cinematic outing for the Dark Knight, said in 2022 that he would love to helm such a project, commenting at the time, "I've always loved Batman. If I ever saw the Bat-Signal up in the air, I'd come running. If I heard that deep, gurgling laugh of The Shadow coming from the darkness, I would also tentatively step outside. And Spider-Man would be ahead of Doctor Strange, but I don't want to put him down the list!"

Batman's Future in the DCU

In regards to his part in the DCU, Batman will debut in the franchise in his own movie, The Brave and the Bold, which was one of several projects announced by DC Studios co-CEO and co-president James Gunn earlier this year, which will be part of the shared universe's first chapter, "Gods & Monsters." The film will not only introduce the DCU version of Batman but also his son Damian Wayne, who, coincidentally, is also Ra's al Ghul's grandson. Other movies in the works for "Gods & Monsters" include Swamp Thing and The Authority, while TV projects include Booster Gold and Waller.

As for the Caped Crusader himself, Gunn clarified that Batman "MIGHT be a couple years older than Superman" in the DCU, while the Last Son of Krypton -- whose own movie for the franchise, Superman: Legacy, is being written and directed by Gunn -- was "younger than in his forties," due to people speculating the character's ages. More recently, when asked how old Batman would be when The Brave and the Bold hits theaters, the filmmaker responded, "We haven't cast him yet so we have no clue." Similarly, no directors have been announced to oversee The Brave and the Bold.

The DC Universe's first movie, Superman: Legacy, arrives in theaters with more power than a locomotive on July 11, 2025.
