Below you'll find the sales estimates for comics and trade paperbacks sold in the direct market for July, 2008. The sales numbers below are estimates based on the information provided by Diamond Comics Distributors earlier this month. Sales estimates for June, 2008 can be found here.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind when reading this data. First off, these are just estimates. These are not exact figures nor should they be treated as such. Second, this data only covers the direct market served by Diamond. It does not include newstands, book stores or overseas markets.
The breakdowns are for just the top 300 comics and top 100 trades listed below. These are not the overall market share. I only deal with numbers that I can see and kick around in my ever evolving number crunching system. Sometimes the numbers get a bit battered and bruised in the process.
The estimated total sales for the 300 comics was 7,197,165 comics which is up by 537,476 units from June and down by 447,012 units from July 2007. Marvel Comics had the largest percentage of the top 300 comics with 48.47% of the total units sold followed by DC Comics with 34.52%.
The top selling comic from Marvel Comics was "Secret Invasion" #4 in slot 1 with an estimated 175,410 units and for DC Comics was "Batman" #678 in rank 5 with an estimated 103,184 units.
The estimated total sales for the 100 trades was 284,657 trades which is down by 20,656 units from June and up by 46,785 units from July 2007.
Topping the trades list in July was "Watchmen" by DC Comics with 19,103 units.
I'll be back later with an analysis of the numbers below.
