As the beginning of Marvel Studios’ Phase Two slate of films prepares to kick off May 3 with “Iron Man 3,” the studio has already begun to look to the films set for 2014, including director James Gunn’s adaptation of “Guardians of the Galaxy.” While the film has already found its Star-Lord in “Parks and Recreation” actor Chris Pratt and its Drax the Destroyer in former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, there may soon be one more name added to the list. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Avatar” actress Zoe Saldana is currently in talks to play the female leading role of Gamora.
In the Marvel Comics Universe, the green-skinned Gamora is widely known as the deadliest woman in the entire universe. Understandable, considering her adoptive father is Thanos, the Mad Titan, who enhanced her speed, strength, agility and durability. The character first appeared in the ’80s and was introduced as a member of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s run of “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2007. Saldana’s rumor of involvement is, in fact, well-timed. A Marvel Infinite Comic written by Brian Michael Bendis featuring the character released earlier today on the publisher’s comics app.
Saldana, set to appear later this year in “Star Trek Into Darkness” as Uhura, would bring the number of actors on the core “Guardians” team to three if cast, leaving only the (presumably) motion-capture roles of Groot, the extraterrestrial tree monster; and Rocket Raccoon, the fearless genetically altered raccoon, to be filled.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” hits theaters August 1, 2014
