It seems that Usagi Tsukino, better known as Sailor Moon, has everything going for her. She's a princess, she's the leader of a powerful group of magical girls, she's always surrounded by her friends, and she'll one day become the Queen of the Earth. After all, while it seems tiresome having to fight against those monsters-of-the-day, being Sailor Moon means she has the power to come out on top. Otherwise, she'd be one of those nameless victims who get their energy stolen in the background.

Despite this, there are plenty of times when being a magical girl came at a great personal expense to Usagi, from what she had to sacrifice to what is unfairly forced on her.

10 She Lost Her Original Friends

In the early episodes, Usagi had her own social circle: her best friend Naru Osaka, geeky admirer Umino, crush Motoki, and even at least two other unnamed classmates. Once she started to befriend the girls who would turn out to be Sailor Scouts, her social life immediately started to be taken up by them, in addition to fighting evil.

While she went on to make a bunch of new, wonderful friendships, Usagi seemed to lose touch with a lot of her old friends.

9 She Had To Give Up Her Dreams

When Usagi wanted to enter the Cinderella Caravan and audition to be a star, Luna refuses to help her, saying her Sailor Scout duties are more important. Admittedly, this turns out to be a good thing, since the whole thing was a trap, but this becomes a recurring trend.

It seems that whenever she tries to do something with her life, from entering a modeling contest or attend a finishing school, it's always the villains trying to kill her. She can't even get her hair done without it being some evil plot. At some point, it's clear that any attempt Usagi makes at making a life for herself will never amount to anything, meaning she's very lucky to fall back on being the Moon Princess.

8 Everyone Picks On Her

For the most part, the other Senshi have become Usagi's closest friends once they've entered her life, but a lot of the characters that have entered Usagi's life since becoming Sailor Moon aren't always the nicest. Rei's usually seen yelling at Usagi or scolding her for something in public. And then there's Chibiusa, who seems to actively torment Usagi, despite being her own mother.

Even Luna, her talking cat, isn't above picking on her or insulting her weight. It's very telling that Usagi breaks down crying when Chibi-Chibi offers her a doughnut. And these are her friends! She also has to put up with the occasional villain-disguised-as-a-bully, like Kuroki Mio or Natsumi Ginga.

7 Her Boyfriend's Forgotten Her (Multiple Times)

Usagi's Boyfriend forgot Her

In their past lives, Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion were in love with each other. When Usagi first meets Mamoru, however, he is a bully in purple pants who seems to go out of his way to insult and humiliate her. Even when he realizes she's the princess he's been searching for, he doesn't get too much time with her before he's captured by the Dark Kingdom and turned against her.

And when the Dark Kingdom's vanquished for good, in the anime, he's forgotten poor Usagi all over again and is back to treating her horribly, all the while Usagi tries and fails to restore his memories. And when he finally remembers her, in the anime, he ends up breaking up with her thanks to a scheme from King Endymion that backfired horribly.

6 She Watched Her Friends Die In Front Of Her

During the final battle with the Dark Kingdom, Usagi is forced to watch her new friends, Makoto, Ami, Minako, and Rei, all suffer horrible deaths, often in front of her. The salt in the wound is that they died protecting her. Finally, she would end up losing the love of her life, Mamoru, who died protecting her just after she managed to save him from Queen Beryl.

This wouldn't even be the last time she'd be forced to watch her friends die in front of her, as Galaxia would also kill off her friends one-by-one. To make matters worse, she had made even more allies to lose, from the Outer Senshi to Princess Kakyuu (and in the manga, she'd even endure the loss of the Sailor Starlights and the talking cats.)

5 She Had To Kill Her Boyfriend

In the anime, Usagi manages to break Queen Beryl's spell on Tuxedo Mask and he manages to sacrifice his life to save her. In the manga, he's the final agent Usagi has to face before dealing with Metallia directly and is forced to kill the man she's loved since before she was born, in a murder-suicide.

Luckily, the sacrifice of the other Senshi managed to revive Usagi, who was able to use her healing powers to save the day.

4 She's Had To Fight Her Own Friends

During her ultimate fight with Galaxia, she's come up with a plan even crueler than murdering her friends: bringing them back to life as her minions and forcing them to attack Usagi. In the end, Usagi is able to withstand their attacks, but is forced to kill her beloved friends with "Silver Moon Crystal Power Therapy Kiss!" To further humiliate Usagi, Galaxia then reveals that she's also revived Mamoru as her slave.

There have been other times when her loved ones have been turned against her, like when Sailor Mercury was turned into Dark Mercury in the live-action show.

3 She's Died Herself A Few Times

Usagi is usually the final girl who has to face off against the villain, especially when her friends keep dying, but this doesn't mean that she's always safe: there have been plenty of times when she was the one to lose her life, or at least come pretty close to it.

In the anime, using the Silver Crystal at its full power appears to come at the cost of her life, such as when she fought Queen Beryl or the Kisenian Blossom. There have also been times when she's been put in a death-like state, like when her Dream Mirror is broken. And, naturally, there was the time she died in her past life as Princess Serenity. Luckily, being in a magical girl show means she usually doesn't stay dead for too long.

2 She Watched Her Daughter Fade From Existence

Chibiusa Usagi Death

Normally, Chibiusa's existence would cause a casual viewer to think that everything will work out for Usagi. After all, she means that Usagi will not only survive to see another day but will even get to marry her prince. Unfortunately, there have been plenty of times when it's made clear her happy future isn't assured.

In both the anime and manga, there is a scene where Chibiusa is erased from existence due to the villains targeting Mamoru. In the former, it's due to Nehelenia's machinations, causing Chibiusa to fade away in her arms. In the manga, Usagi watches Chibiusa fade away right in front of her as Galaxia kills Mamoru.

1 She Had An Evil Alter-Ego

sailor moon usagi

In the live-action series, Usagi develops an alter-ego thanks to her past life as Princess Serenity. Unlike most incarnations, where Usagi and the Moon Princess essentially share the same personality, here Princess Serenity is bitter and vengeful. In fact, in this version, it was Princess Serenity who destroyed the earth out of revenge for losing Endymion.

When her tragic memories resurface, Usagi transforms into the powerful "Princess Sailor Moon," who was willing to destroy the world all over again to regain Endymion, even hurting her friends. Usagi herself even fought against the "Princess" for dominance in her own mind.
