The Sailor Moon manga is somewhat condensed compared to its 90's anime adaptation, being more or less 60 chapters compared to 200 episodes, but still features a lot of storylines, characters, and features that casual fans might be surprised by. In addition, the manga also had a few side-stories, which also put the Senshi and their allies in unique situations.

Because of this, characters could come off as widely different between the two mediums, going from weak in one version to one of the most powerful characters in the other. Likewise, there are bound to be characters that are iconic to fans of the original manga that casual fans of the anime have likely never heard of.

10 Tuxedo Mask Had Powers

Sailor moon Tuxedo Mask Powers

In the anime, Tuxedo Mask's powers seemed limited to throwing roses and offering inspiring motivational speeches to get Sailor Moon to attack the villain. The manga occasionally showed him to have attacks similar to the powers of the Sailor Senshi.

Two of his named attacks included "Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber," where he appeared to attack with a fatal blast of wind or energy, and "Pink Sugar Tuxedo Attack," a tandem attack he performed with Sailor Chibi Moon. Similar to Usagi, he also seemed capable to transforming into Prince or King Endymion to offer help to Sailor Moon.

9 All The Senshi Were Princesses

The Power Guardians reveal the Sailor Scouts are princesses.

In the original anime, the only Sailor Senshi with ties to royalty appeared to be Sailor Moon, who is none other than Princess Serenity, the Moon Princess the characters were searching for during the first story arc. The other Senshi seemed to be her guardians who also lived on the moon and seemed to pattern their powers and titles off of the planets in the solar system. The manga, however, eventually revealed that the other Senshi were the princesses of their planets as well.

They still appeared subordinate to Princess Serenity, but each also had a castle orbiting their planet from which they could draw power, each said to have been a gift from Queen Serenity. They also appeared to be the rulers of their planets, as Princess Venus was noted to have sent soldiers to help the Moon Kingdom, suggest the Moon had an imperial system.

8 The Sailor Power Guardians Assisted The Senshi And Gave Them Power

In the manga, each of the planetary Sailor Senshi were revealed to have fairy-like beings called the Sailor Power Guardians who assisted them and gave them power, as well as resembling each of them. They were said to dwell within the palaces of each Senshi and addressed their individual mistresses as princesses.

Guardian Mercury and Guardian Jupiter were the most prominent of the group, initially appearing before the others to help their respective Senshi fight agents of the Dead Moon Circus. In these early appearances, the two guardians implied they were something on an alter-ego for each of the Senshi.

7 The Genius Loci Existed As Recurring Manga Villains

Genius loci in sailor moon manga

The genius loci were recurring villains that often appeared as "monsters-of-the-day" in the side stories of the Sailor Moon manga. Inspired by beings from Roman mythology, they are essentially ghosts that haunt a certain place, from dentist offices to storehouses, and cause mischief when disturbed, even shown capable of possessing human hosts. They seemed to work independently of any higher-ranking villain, unlike the monsters-of-the-day that usually appeared in the anime. That said, they were still susceptible to the Sailor Senshi's attacks.

While some of the side stories were adapted into the anime, often the monsters were conflated with the villains of that season. One possible exception was Bonnoun, a genius loci that attacked Sailor Mercury in the special Ami's First Love. Beyond a comment about haunting a place for years, she's actually destroyed before she can properly explain just who or what she is.

6 The Asteroid Senshi Were The Future Guardians Of Sailor Chibi Moon

The Amazon Quartet in Sailor Moon: Besu Besu, Cele Cele, Para Para, and Jun Jun.

In the anime, the Amazoness Quartet were four girls who served the Dead Moon Circus, helping them search for Pegasus and arranging for Lemures to attack the Sailor Senshi. Eventually, however, they turn against the villains and side with the Sailor Senshi. They are shown to have survived the destruction of the circus and presumably go off to live as normal girls, although they imply they will meet the Sailor Senshi again.

In the manga, Sailor Saturn arranged for Neo-Queen Serenity to revive them, at which point it was revealed that they were the Sailor Quarter, the future guardians of Sailor Chibi Moon. Fans have unofficially dubbed them the "Asteroid Senshi," as they are individually named after asteroids: Sailor Vesta, Sailor Pallas, Sailor Ceres, and Sailor Juno. They were shown to have two named group attacks: "Amazoness Jungle Arrow" and "Pink Lady's Freezing Kiss," the last of which was performed with Sailor Chibi Moon.

5 The Maenads Were Priestesses Who Dwelled Within Elysion

In the manga, the Maenads were priestesses who dwelled within Elysion. Kept within a sleep-like stasis, they were able to survive the machinations of the Dead Moon Circus. They were later seen helping to guide the Sailor Senshi to Helios after he had been weakened.

Like many aspects of the Sailor Moon franchise, they derive their names from Greco-Roman mythology. However, they don't have too much in common with their mythological namesakes, who were followers of Dionysus, the wine god, and were often portrayed as dangerous "mad women," such as in the myth of Orpheus.

4 Guardian Cosmos Appeared To Guard The Galaxy Cauldron And The Cosmos Crystal

In the Sailor Moon manga, various supernatural forces appeared that did not make the transition to the anime. Guardian Cosmos was a fairy-like being who appeared to guard the Galaxy Cauldron and the Cosmos Crystal. Initially offering ambiguous claims about Sailor Moon's own crystal, she actually offers her a choice: a new life as a star or to resume her old life with her friends.

Usagi chooses the latter. That said, their meeting ends on a note of caution, as Guardian Cosmos warns her that Chaos will likely return in some form or another.

3 The Time Chibiusa Saved Tanabata

sailor moon manga

Holidays seemed slightly more important in the Sailor Moon manga than in the anime. The fight against Princess Kaguya explicitly took place around Christmas, for example, in the manga story it was based on, even if the anime adaptation had a visit from Santa Claus.

One manga story revolved around the festival of Tanabata, in which a mysterious figure, posing as a fake Sailor Moon, tries to hypnotize young women into turning against men. Chibiusa deduces the enemy is Shokujo, the weaver, a prominent figure of the holiday, who is being manipulated by her evil sisters into thinking her husband, Kengyu, has abandoned her. Sailor Chibi Moon transforms and vanquishes the wicked sisters as Kengyu appears to reassure his wife of his love.

2 Usagi & Mamoru's Wedding Was Not Included In The Original Anime

Mamoru Usagi Prince Princess

While the 90's anime ended on a romantic note between Usagi and Mamoru, the two get a bit more closure in the original manga: they are seen getting married in a church, fulfilling Usagi's dream to become a bride, with all of their friends in attendance.

While a wedding was not adapted into the 90's anime, Usagi and Mamoru were shown getting married in the live-action adaptation.

1 Phantom Ace Was Revealed To Be The Reincarnation Of Adonis

Phantom Ace Sailor V Adonis

Back when Minako was Sailor V, she was a fan of the TV character, Phantom Ace, played by idol Ace Saijyo, who seemed to take on the role in real-life to help her fight enemies just like her own Tuxedo Mask.

Eventually, however, he was revealed to be the reincarnation of Adonis, a soldier who was in love with Princess Venus. Unfortunately, in his new life, he was an agent for the Dark Agency and was now Sailor V's enemy. He dies once more, assuring her that she'll no longer have to choose between love or her duty.
