Sailor Moon is the kind of a series where it's easy to have a favorite character. Sometimes, it's as easy as picking your favorite color. This is a series where even the villains can be likable, either from actually being sympathetic or being one of those "love to hate" villains. Or even both.

But even then, there are those characters that tend to rub viewers the wrong way. The characters that can be hypocritical, selfish, or even outright mean to the other characters. Or worse, there are the characters who find themselves antagonizing a fan-favorite character. Today, we're looking at the supporting members of the Sailor Moon universe who kind of made enemies with the fanbase.

And remember, just because a character is disliked or outright hated doesn't mean they can't be popular too. And it goes without saying that "[Insert character here] was nicer in the manga" probably applies to most, if not all, of the following characters. And, finally, there are bound to be spoilers.

10 Luna

Long-suffering Luna does have a lot of fans' sympathy for having put up with a lot of Usagi's quirks, but she can be mean at times, like when she made a nasty drawing of Usagi when she was worried about her weight. She also can be a little too hard on Artemis, but shows little loyalty to him, leaving him for any pretty astronaut or idol that comes her way. Despite being, well, a cat.

On a related note, fans really didn't care that much for Sailor Luna in the live-action show.

9 Sailor Neptune

For many fans, Uranus and Neptune represent a dark turn for the series: not only is Season 3 considered one of the darker parts of the series, the anime notably cut them out of the more lighthearted Season 4. Their behavior, which includes trying to murder Hotaru, viciously turning on Usagi, going on vacation when the Scouts are dealing with Nehellenia, and returning to murder Hotaru...and also Setsuna...which also turned out to be a bad idea, was not great, to say the least.

But Neptune gave the fans another reason to distrust her: in her one appearance is SuperS, she was willing to let the human race be destroyed by shadows in exchange for a villain releasing Uranus. Kind of shows a double standard with that whole "killing Hotaru" thing.

8 Sailor Uranus

As mentioned, she and Neptune kind of have a reputation of being a little too ruthless and bloodthirsty, which kind of puts off some fans. Generally, while Uranus is the more hotblooded of the two, at least she is upfront with the whole "killing Hotaru" thing.

However, then came Sailor Stars, which often pitted Uranus against fan-favorite Seiya. It goes to show that many fans thought the Starlights were basically an attempt to redo the Outer Scouts.

7 The Starlights

Of course, that's the funny thing about opinions: people don't always agree. Some fans didn't like the Starlights, thinking that they got too much focus in the final season, with rumors that even series creator Naoko Takeuchi was surprised about how much focus they got.

Of the three, Seiya seems to get less hate than Taiki and Yaten. Of those two, some fans think Yaten is snobby, but other fans outright hate Taiki for once leaving Ami for dead in a fight against Sailor Gamer.

6 Chibi-Chibi

Sure, a lot of fans think she is cute, but some viewers thought she was just a copy of Chibiusa and a testament to how formulaic the show could get towards the end. And can Usagi finally get a break from all these chibis brainwashing her family?

Even the most cynical fan can point out Chibi-Chibi at least tries to be nice. At least she shared her doughnuts with Usagi. But heaven help you if you ask a fan about her real identity...

5 Shingo

Usagi's younger brother, Shingo, before he gradually disappeared from the show, wasn't exactly the nicest person to his sister, especially since he doesn't know that she's also his favorite superhero. He's also not the best influence on his niece, Chibiusa, like the time he got her to eat a lemon pie before Usagi could.

Not all fans dislike him. Despite never meeting once in canon, a lot of fans like to pair him off with Hotaru. Apparently, people have strong opinions on Hotaru.

4 Pegasus

The fourth season of Sailor Moon uses a lot of fairy-tale motifs: magic mirrors, a wicked witch, and even a "cursed" prince: Helios, who takes the form of Pegasus. He's searching for a maiden who can save him. And the girl searched for is none other than Chibiusa.

While their exact ages are complicated, many fans found their relationship to be pedophilic. The fact he spends most of their time together as a talking horse also isn't helping things.

3 Mamoru Chiba

Mamoru is Usagi's literal prince, but the anime's obsession with soap opera-like storylines, between him losing his memories and breaking up with Usagi in a misaimed attempt to save her, really didn't endear him to fans. It's very telling that, despite only having one season together, a lot of fans think Usagi should have ended up with Seiya.

A lot of fans also don't seem too willing to forgive his Season 1 behavior, where he was sort of a bully to Usagi. That and his '90s wardrobe aged worse than Rei's pink overalls.

2 Sailor Mars

Rei Hino is kind of the "mean girl" of the group, always yelling at and insulting Usagi, even without provocation. Even the other Scouts aren't spared her wrath, she once physically assaulted Ami to prevent her from saying Usagi was a good leader (made even nastier in the Dic dub, where she also forced poor Amy to say Raye would even be a better leader than Serena).

Some anime purists like to excuse her behavior out of cultural differences or just outright blame it on the dub, but the reality is that even Japanese viewers weren't too fond of her: she was the least popular of the five original Scouts in some polls and the animators admitted they struggled with making her likable. It probably didn't help that the first series spent a lot of time focusing on her, before introducing the more amiable Makoto (who notably is more than willing to call out Rei's nastiness) and Minako, or even Ami, who was introduced before her! The first's season's bizarre decision to make her a love rival to Usagi for Mamoru probably didn't help her image, either.

1 Chibiusa

Rini with Secret Identity in Sailor Moon R

You know how Sailor Moon started about a relatable, klutzy crybaby becoming a glamorous superhero who took the world by storm. Well, how about the show mixes things up by adding a pink-haired brat who takes up more and more screentime until she becomes the main focus of the show, even taking over Usagi's transformation sequence.

There are quite a few reasons Chibiusa is disliked. She's bratty, precocious, and spends most of her early episodes torturing Usagi...her own mother (let's just say time-travel is involved). Some fans even found her creepy, between her crush on Mamoru, her own father, and the aforementioned relationship with a talking horse.

Chibiusa does have her fans, but it's rumored that even the animators hated her. The final season even featured the running joke that she ceased to exist, even disappearing from photos, something that was never resolved!
