Sailor Mercury had interesting powers, and her civilian self, Ami Mizuno, was just as charming and smart as her Sailor Senshi identity. The Sailor Senshi had to protect the world from evil many times and Sailor Mercury's special powers and strong analytical skills made her an important part of the team.

The series had a beautiful and wide universe where most of the villains had incredible special powers and skills, yet, Sailor Mercury was always ready to protect others and the earth from evil.

Sailor Moon Mercury Episode 143

Sailor Mercury and her civilian form Ami Mizuno was voted Sailor Moon's most fan-favorite character in Japan. She was a reliable, kind, and hard-working student, and probably that's why so many Japanese viewers could relate to her. Ami basically represented the average Japanese girl viewers who could easily see themselves in her.

In a 1996 interview in Animerica, Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi admitted she didn't focus as much on developing Ami like she did with Rei and other characters. Regardless, Ami became very popular after the 1992 anime started airing.

9 Her Mother is Only Ever Seen Once in the Anime

Sailor Moon SuperS Movie Ami

Ami was solely raised by her mother after her parents divorced. Her mom was also highly intelligent and worked as a doctor; she inspired Ami to work harder and, for a long time, Ami wanted to become a doctor, as well.

While fans saw Usagi's family more frequently, they never actually saw Ami's mother in the classic anime series. The characters even visited the hospital she works at a few times, but again, Ami's mother is only mentioned rather than see. The closest instance of seeing Mrs. Mizuno was in the SuperS movie during a flashback.

8 Allergic To Love Letters

Sailor Moon Ami's Firsrt Love

Ami secretly loved romance novels and enjoyed reading them while taking a hot bath, but she was completely different when it came to real-life romance. Since she was a shy girl who had little experience in dating, she became especially anxious when someone was romantically interested in her in Ami's First Love. So much so that she broke out into red rashes because of them. This led to a comedic confrontation between Sailor Mercury and an evil spirit she mistook for a mysterious academic rival.

7 Speaks German Because of Her Career Aspiration

Sailor Moon R Movie Mercury Goggle POV

In Sailor Moon R, Ami nearly left the team because she was going to study abroad in Germany. Of course, she didn't go, but fans might overlook the fact that Ami speaks German, or at least has a good sense of the language. This seems highly likely when a POV shot is shown of Sailor Mercury's Mercury Goggle in the R movie: all the text is written in German. This might be just a one-off visual, but it makes sense that Ami would be fluent considering how Japanese medical students were once required to learn German. For instance, Japanese medical charts have German written on them.

6 Her Hair Was Difficult to Draw

Sailor Moon Mercury episode 71

It would seem as if the Sailor Senshi with short hair would be the easiest to draw, but the '90s anime's original character designer, Kazuko Tadano, has stated her dislike for Ami's hair. She stated how difficult it was to shape, which is something Naoko Takeuchi agreed with her about.

5 In a Greek Dub, She's Called Sailor Kronos

Sailor Mercury in Episode 80 of Sailor Moon.

Naoko Takeuchi wasn't always the most consistent about matching Sailor Senshi characteristics with their Roman counterparts, but in the ANT1 Greek dub of Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury is called Sailor Kronos for two whole seasons before the show suddenly switched to Sailor Ermis. The change was because Kronos is more appropriate for Sailor Saturn, whose Greek counterpart is Cronus (Roman: Saturn). Meanwhile, Ermis is the Greek way of saying Hermes, Roman Mercury's Greek equivalent.

4 Ami Appeared in Wedding Peach

Because the '90s anime's character designer Kazuko Tadano also worked on fellow magical girl anime Legendary Love Angel: Wedding Peach, the two shows sported some easter eggs and crossover effects.

One particular moment that can easily be missed is in episode 5 of Wedding Peach. At the start of the episode, two of Momoko's random classmates bear a striking resemblance to Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars.

3 Was Almost a Cyborg

In the manga, Minako was going to have a friend named Hikaru Sorano in Codename: Sailor V, who bore a striking resemblance to a character who we now know as Ami Mizuno. Instead, Takeuchi ended up turning Hikaru into a unique and unrelated character named Ami in her Sailor Moon manga. Originally, there had been a twist to Ami: Takeuchi wanted Ami to be a cyborg who eventually died from her injuries. Takeuchi's editor was deeply opposed to the idea, though. So, Ami became fully human, but that didn't stop Takeuchi from revisiting the cyborg element for Hotaru Tomoe.

2 Her First Attack Was Unnamed in the Manga

Sailor Moon Crystal Mercury Aqua Mist

As the Senshi of Water, Sailor Mercury has control over the element in its many forms: liquid, snow, ice, and even mist. In the 1992 anime, Mercury conjures a temporary shroud of water mist to confuse the enemies so that another Sailor Senshi can deliver the finishing blow.

Yet in the very original print of the manga, Mercury's first technique wasn't even given a name. She created mist like she always does, but Takeuchi left this technique unnamed until the 2003-2004 reprint of the manga. The attack was finally titled Mercury Aqua Mist, which matches the one seen in the live-action adaptation that aired on television during the same period. The maneuver was also called Mercury Aqua Mist in Sailor Moon Crystal.

1 She Has Red Hair in Toon Makers' Adaptation

Toon Makers Sailor Moon Mercury

Serious Sailor Moon fans have heard about there being an original series that preceded the famous DiC English dub. Before then, Toon Makers actually wanted to create a Sailor Moon series combining animation and live-action footage. The changes were numerous, and only some fans have seen the 17-minute pilot; which has been shown in part at some conventions. One of these changes included Sailor Mercury being a red-haired girl who also used a wheelchair.
