Divided into two movies, Sailor Moon Cosmos is a direct sequel to 2021's Sailor Moon Eternal, which expands the storyline of Toei Animation's rebooted anime, Sailor Moon Crystal. Depicting the events of the "Shadow Galactica" arc from Naoko Takeuchi's iconic manga, the narrative sees Sailor Moon and her many allies endeavor to save the entire galaxy from the evils of Sailor Galaxia once and for all. Part 1 will debut in Japan on June 9, with Part 2 scheduled to premiere on June 30.

Takeuchi's Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series appeared in Kodansha's Nakayoshi from 1991 until 1997 and stands as one of the best-selling manga in history, alongside Sui Ishida's Tokyo Ghoul and Yuji Terajima's Ace of Diamond. The multimedia franchise that it kicked off continues to serve as a cornerstone of pop culture, and fans still celebrate the story by creating their own content. For example, a talented cosplayer recently shared their mashup cosplay that combines Sailor Moon with Marvel's Moon Knight, and a skilled artist uploaded their illustration of an evil Usagi.

Kodansha Comics distributes Takeuchi's manga series in North America.
